While we're waiting for young Kinboshi to return, who can tell me who this unfortunate chap is?  Thomas Midgley Jr. Put lead in people's pencils petrol. Eeeeek... Good shot. Not only that, but once he'd realised how dangerous lead was to the environment he set about making amends and developing a safe refrigerant for homes and came up with something called FREON, which were CFC gases that we now know destroyed the ozone layer. He then developed polio and died after getting caught up in the harness that helped him out of bed and strangling himself. There is a lovely piece about him in Bill Bryson's ASHONE. I don't think Des Wilson liked him very much though. |
