£100 freezeout, level 2, blinds 50-100. Image is good to most of the table except for the villain who has only just joined the table 4 or 5 hands ago and the bird who obviously discovered the poker club whilst looking for the local bingo hall. Anyway, we have doubled up in the 3rd hand but lost a bit since so have 16k approx. Villain is unknown to me and limps utg along with 5 others. I make it 600 and get two callers. Flop is 7 8 9 rainbow and we all check. Should I be checking here? What would others do? Turn is an ace bringing two diamonds and utg leads for 2100, bingo bird folds and I call. River is a 4 clubs and he leads for 3600 leaving 5900 back. What should I do?  Obv folding isn't an option, raise or call?

if you bet the flop you probs have to bet fold unless u think one of limpers is gunna go crazy with 1 pr so i think i check.  on the river i think i just call.  I dont think raising is terrible as you obv get called by worse but i think calling is best

I think you really have to push here.  Before he bets, you must be looking for a way to get all his chips in, as his remaining chips aren't even that much more than the pot?

JT and 56 you are obviously behind, but there are a whole host of 2 pair hands, sets and even slow played big aces he calls with.   If he has the straight it is just a cooler and move on.

Good advice with Thomas Middleton ITT.  As Bulldozer says, I make it a few hundred more pre too and still expect a caller or two.

Agree. Would make it 700-800 pre and still expect action.

Post flop think you've played it right. Check back flop and call river. This early there's no point in putting yourself if a horrible spot if villian re shoves river

Double check that one George.

Villain has 59 bigs back. Hardly short.

With 6 limpers in the pot pre-flop you want to thin the field to one, maybe two callers. The 600 raise achieves that perfectly so I think that amount is spot on. The flop isn't ideal and I think the hand is easier to play if you accept 3 streets of value and still having the winner probably isn't going to happen here. Getting raised by an unknown if you bet puts you in an impossible spot so I like checking behind and playing the pot that way. Middling pairs and 10-J hit your oppos range so hard I think the check is wise and you can still pick up value from the sd on the turn anyway.

Turn standard. River is a call for me. Yeah only realistically 10-J beats us but we pegged that hand from the start and it is still realistic. We must look pretty damn strong to villain on the turn when he leads the A and we come along so there's no doubt he has us on a pretty tight range. Yet he clearly v-bets the river regardless. I don't think he has 2 pair really, so by not raising we lose a bit of value from smaller sets but save money when we run into 10-J, so I don't think checking and hopefully winning a very nice pot is the end of the world.

Thank you all that replied, I see now that calling on the end is the better play v an unknown, my view at the time was skewed by the ace on the turn as i felt he makes the same bet with a big ace or a set, and again on the blank river. I just felt at the time that calling with top set was weak and losing value. Always different thinking about it whilst it's happening i suppose.

Just for the record i set him in and he made a brave call with 10 J Cheesy
