Should be fun tomorrow. I is prepared to spend up to £6,000 on rebuys to secure some league points.

I heard that Diddly Tiddly will stretch to £10k for such an event.

For those that fancy a read, here's the latest, and probably last, in my series of waffly poker interviews...

KEVIN O’LEARY, a familiar face on the European and US tournament poker scene, is about to head to Las Vegas for a fourth time this year. Same as for the previous three trips, this one is open-ended and will largely depend on results, although on previous evidence it’s liable to last for around five weeks.
That’s about how long The Venetian is running its latest ‘Deep Stack Extravaganza’, a series O’Leary more than anyone has dominated over the past couple of years.
Three outright wins in the past 12 months in fields of anything up to 800 is no mean feat, but plenty of near-misses can be added in to his results too, as well as the initial success he gained there back in 2007, plus the Caesars Mega Stack main event last year for $272,000.
“I far prefer playing in Las Vegas,” says O’Leary, “the tournaments are much better run, the prize pools are bigger, the weather’s fantastic and there are great restaurants everywhere.
“It’s win-win as far as I’m concerned, much better than playing a 22-runner freezeout in the arse-end of nowheresville, England and facing the prospect of a two-hour drive home in minus five degrees afterwards.”
Despite preferring Vegas, there’s also been plenty of domestic success along the way, which led to a sponsorship deal for a few years:
“I was a sponsored pro for a while and it was both good and bad, but sadly I feel a lot of the online poker companies are treating players worse as time goes on, as they try to milk their own interests without properly listening to constructive advice.
“A lot of those in control of the purse strings don't even play poker at a meaningful level themselves, or truly understand the game, yet are happy to dictate how the players’ schedules should work in order to justify a deal.
“I'm pretty unhappy that nowadays TV tournaments are becoming more and more of a closed shop, much the same as the snooker scene was a few years ago.
“When you turn on the TV, you see the same players event after event. This isn't because these guys have won their way through a series of qualifiers, it's because someone from a production team has a list of people that are pre-selected to play.
“Generally, although not always, these guys aren’t even using their own money to buy in and that is hugely unfair. A few online qualifiers are scattered in, but otherwise it's who knows who and what deals have been made behind the scenes.
“I’ve done a few TV events and have enjoyed them. Media exposure is always important, but to me as a professional the results and the money rank well above being on every magazine cover.
“The public deserves better than to watch players that don't need the money, haven't paid the entry out of their own pocket and are not always giving it their all.
“It's an awkward situation and I hope there's a fairer system in future to allow some new poker talent to come through.
“That’s my only real gripe with poker, though, and otherwise I like to have fun with the game, messing about at the table and always trying to be light-hearted.
“I like to talk, sing, tell jokes and make balloon animals (not really!), but it's never malicious or derogatory. A player at the World Series once told me I was ‘annoying, but in a good way’, which I took as a compliment.
“I’ve got no time for players berating others and lecturing them on how to play. Just because they see Hellmuth doing it doesn't make it right. It isn't. And just for the record Hellmuth normally acts like a complete tit at the table, outstanding poker ability or not.
“Every table now seems to have one or two ready to bring us a mix of the following lines - ‘How can you call with that?’, ‘You're a donkey’, ‘I'd play you heads up all day’ and the classic ‘Don't you know who I am?’ That’s just sad.
"As for my upcoming trip, my first aim is to be focused and ready for a month of tournament poker and to get the results I know I can. These days I steer clear of the table games.
“I'd always been known on the circuit for being a sensible pro with no leaks at all and good bankroll management, but I made a few mistakes recently when I started flirting with blackjack.
“I won, then won some more, then won again, but then I lost a huge lump. It gave me an interesting insight into why some of the sickos of the poker world do what they do for the quick hit of table games. But happily I'm all better now and it's strictly poker in future for me. It was a hard lesson to learn.
“Vegas is a tough enough place to clear a profit without messing around with casino games in which you're at a disadvantage.
“If a quality player like Dean Morris can fail to notch a single tournament cash on a trip, it just goes to show. That’s something I’ll be telling myself over and over again on the flight.
“Overall the game has been good to me and allowed me to do a lot I'd never have done otherwise. I've met some wonderful people over the years through poker and hopefully that will continue to be the case. I'll just try to stay grounded and keep on top of my game.”

Very interesting read

Would be interested to know Kev`s opinion on the general standard of play overseas compared to a decent comp at the G for example

Is the game more aggressive? Is the average player tougher than those found in UK cardrooms?

Are men over 30 wearing skin-tight jeans, and with died hair, held in the highest regard over there as they are in UK cardrooms?

All in all,great stuff

Well Done!

Nice write-up mr chomps.

Presumably kev's success in Vegas has nothing to do with his Venetian-dealing girlffriend? (said in jest obv).

Cya tonight boys 'n' girls.

Got a lot of time for Mr. O'Leary as he taught me the following two lessons. Firstly in one of my early festival events I had stood up to walk away thinking I had lost when he pointed out that it was a split pot just as the chips were about to be passed to another player.
Secondly he was the first player I know who used the following quote
"You meet nice people playing poker...............just not very many"

Good interview chompster.

See you this evening

Yes, another excellent piece of Chomps pennage, even though it's mainly KOL speakage.

It's really rather sad these interviews are coming to an end, you ought to get a Magazine to publish them. They pay fortunes - as much as £250.......Wink

So, Friday night is 8.30, £75, 8,000 chips & a half hour clock. Almost certainly one will be present to donate.

At the risk if being a mini smuzzles, what time does the Sunday £100 begin, please? 4pm, 4.30pm, 5pm, 5.30pm?

Plan A is the £500-er at Brighton on Saturday, a 2 dayer, but Plan B, in the event of an entirely predictable failure to graduate to Day Two, may well be Luton.

Yep, more points in the bag for Snitchy last night, two of the buggers. That's enough to nudge him ahead of Lucky in the overall rankings though.
Looks like the Wednesday crapshoot is here to stay, another healthy field turned up last night.
I really want to play tonight but there's a DOUBLE bill of Masterchef on TV. Do I really want to miss 90mins of Monica and Roo? Hmm, it's a dilemma.

Sunday = 5.30pm, buy in until 7pm*

*This offer excludes Celtic

It's a good job you've stopped showing that line under the "elite" top nine as I'd have just fallen below it !

Well done Glenn.  See you on Friday.
