Nah I disagree on this one Cos.
If it was just weights then the protein shake would suffice, but it's not.
I take the carbs at the gym, straight after finishing my run. When your at the gym for that long you need the carbs. Takes me 10-15 mins to get home. Once back I have a protein shake. Its a system that works for me.

I'm no expert on running but this seems a bit back to front to me.

Surely if you're going to have a carb drink you take it before your run to provide the energy to train? If you take your carbs after running what are they going to be used for? Your body doesn't hang around waiting for energy to do something. It'll have found it from somewhere to get you through your run and it shouldn't need topping up unless you're severely dehydrated.

If you take a carb drink you're just pumping yourself full of sugar which isn't going to get used so will be stored.

On top of this you're taking on a protein shake which just adds more calories to your count.

I can't understand the 'meh at the cals' statement?

You've got no chance of losing 2st in 3 months if that's your attitude.

Calories are the key to this and every unnecessary one you consume makes your goal that little bit more difficult to attain.

If you struggle to walk the next day you'd be better off shortening your run to a point where you can walk and removing the carb drink.

+1 to what matt said.

The reason I suggested protein shake was because you were taking it after a workout (I.e. For recovery).  If its for energy for your session, like matt says, take it before.

How many calories in a carb drink? Never had one.

Second blast at the dumbell pressing today.

I managed to improve on last week which is obviously the goal.

All the sets were to failure. Arms were wobbling on the last rep of each set.

The last set was really tough. I was determined to hit 6 though so that I get to start on the 27.5s again next week.

Numbers below:

31st Jan 2011 25kg x 8, 25kg x 9, 25kg x 8, 25kg x 7

7th Feb 2011 25kg x 11, 27.5kg x 7, 27.5kg x 6, 27.5kg x 6

I'd be interested to know Kinboshi's thoughts on this.

He's far more knowledgeable about nutrition for running than I'll ever be and will know when/if to take carb drinks.

boshi will prob know yeah, but boshi also runs some pretty long distances. Vegaslover atm is 16 stone and just starting to train again hence why my first thoughts are that a carb drink prob not necessary.

My thoughts on it would be to cut down the pace so that he doesn't need the carb drink just to be able to walk the next day.

It should be all about losing calories not consuming them.

went to the gym today feel great after which is good for motivation to keep it up.

did 20mins interval training on the treadmill (2mins jog@7.5 30seconds run@10.5)  then 20mins on an interval program on the bike.  The trainer set me a goal to improve my running over 6 weeks so hopefully will see some improvement over the next 3 or 4 weeks.  My goal is to increase speed on the treadmill and start doing 2mins jog 1min run.  Prob be a little while before i can do that!

After my run/bike i went for a swim, did about 20 lengths which is more of a wind down than a work out.

I went into the sauna for my usual 10mins of relaxing and it got me thinking, are there any physical benefits from the Sauna or is it just a nice way to relax?

Had a good session tonight, training for about an hour and a half solidly and I was knackered by the time I finished. Increasing the cardio with every weights session too. wanna get back to training legs but not sure if that's the right thing to do whilst I'm trying to do cardio most days to lose weight.

Would think as long as you're doing 30 mins or whatever after weights it'll be fine and then just skip it on the leg day. As long as your eating is gooot it'll continue to drop off. I only lost 1lb this week no doubt courtesy of my chocolate binge during the superbowl Cheesy

I'm pushing up as well, still not passed 75kg on the bench but pushed up my other weights tonight and pb'd a few exercises which is always nice!!
