do you think it is a good idea to use protein when you are just looking to lose weight? A chap at work suggested getting on the shakes even though I'm just doing CV at the moment.

Some protein has been said to help baldies with hair re-growth. Maybe that's why he was suggesting it

I've noticed some gym/fitness/weight fanatics are incredibly short sighted/narrow minded about this stuff and think that the only way to do things is their way - they can't comprehend that there's more than one way of getting fit, and a different approach is more suitable for some people. I'd guess he knows his stuff about what he wants to do rather than fitness in general.

lol, what I said - he knows what he likes to do and thinks everyone else should do the same, even when it's inappropriate for what they're trying to achieve.
That's the dichotomy between him sounding like he knows what he's talking about but not actually being helpful.

Ahh I didn't know whether you were saying I was being stubborn or the gym guy was.
I'm sure its not a bad thing, especially as it will take away some of soviet's hunger and prob not an addition of calories rather than a replacement, but I still don't really see a huge need. Could be wrong though obv.

The point being that I don't expect that's why he suggested it - obviously it's a bit of guesswork - but I think it's more likely (because that's they way most people's minds work) that he suggested it because he thinks protein shakes are good as opposed to any deeper thinking about why and in what circumstance.

the guy that offered me some advice is a former pro rugby player (injured when young so now works at the bank!) so is probably more into the building up side of things rather than weightloss, however he is really into nutrition etc so is a good source of advice.
I think I am going to focus on eating better and continuing with the CV for the next 4 weeks, at which point I am going to re-assess. CBA with the protein shakes for the time being, simply because I think the difference it will make is pretty small.
My goals will change with time and therefore I do like to ask lots of peoples opinions so its great to have different views.
In the short two weeks I have been hitting the gym I already feel better, I'm less fooooked after the treadmill and am running further than further, small steps of course but its nice to make progress.
My goal is to get down to 17st by mid march which will be after 6 weeks of training. I am then going to look to introduce some weight sessions but will still focus mainly on CV.
I am so unfit its unbelieveable however I am improving, my swimming is coming on great guns. I have always enjoyed swimming which makes it easier and the pool is normally pretty quiet so getting 20-30 lengths in ever session which I really enjoy, plus I get to hang about in the sauna looking at the other lads women which is great...
