The trouble is that I'm one of the world's techno-dunces and as much as i would love to be able to surf the net while I'm out and about I fear not being able to operate the damn thing. So here's the quandary.
What phone would be the easiest and best for me ?
At present I have an old Vodaphone pay-as-you-go tarriff called allcalls which is very cheap but I guess would not work with a newer contraption with internet etc. I know nothing about tarriffs other than that one and virtually nothing about phones either except that I see almost everyone using these touch-screens which look deceptively easy to use.
All suggestions would be most welcome and if more info is needed please just ask.

What phone would be best for you will completely depend on what you want it for?
Phone calls, and the odd text means you dont need a touch screen 2035 phone. However the iphone (the only touchscreen I can talk about because it's the only one i've had) is very very simple to use (my mother AND father both use them and they are oooold!). You can choose how much you want to get into the technical aspects of the phone. I haven't got a clue about how much they try and charge you though (from quick searches its alot!). Sorry I cant be more help!

I would highly recommend the BlackBerry Curve 8900, it's an amazing phone. You can text, ring (obv), email, facebook, yahoo, flickr, msn, etc etc, and also you can surf the internet really easily because of its tracker ball and qwerty keyboard. The amazing thing about it for me is that it makes receiving emails and facebook message just like receiving a text, and you can link up several accounts so that you don't have to laboriously check all your accounts everyday. Also it has BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) which is instant messaging for phones which is very handy if you have friends that have BlackBerrys, its £5 a month for this extra service but there is no limit so it is effectively like a free form of texting, you can send pictures etc through BBM aswell. At the moment I am on Flext35 contract on T Mobile, so I pay £35 a month (18 month contract) and that gives me £180 worth of credit to spend on texts and phone calls but I also get unlimited web'N'walk (so unlimited internet) and then I pay £5 for the BBM and other BB services, I think it's quite a good deal but if you look about the T Mobile and 02 sit you will probably be able to find a cheaper deal. I would rank this BB as the best phone I've ever had.
edit: possible helpful link

NOKIA N97 is very easy to use for old people, I'm living proof. Got unlimited internet, more calls and texts than I can use for £29 per month back in the late summer so don't know if its a great deal but fine for me.
WIth hindsight though I kinda wish I'd got an iPhone

Got one of these for work and they are incredibly practical too, although I do find the keyboard (using symbols etc) very clumsy compared with ordinary predictive text phones or the N97 for that matter

Apple take other peoples ideas and turn them, almost, idiot proof. Better value elsewhere if you can work them.

Ralph,
With due respect, I think you are a wee bit old for these new-fangled gadgets.

iphone is extremely simple to work all the gadgets, idiot proof pretty much.
You would no doubt be getting the golf apps making it super easy to follow the tournaments from your phone

N97 ftw!
Otherwise, the iphone is pretty good too. Blackberry's are great phones too, however, it comes across from your post Ralph that you won't really be using alot of the features which make a Blackberry worthwhile.
For internet, I'd go for a N97 or iphone.

I know that app! It's called Sunny Nagi. The app gladly collects the OAP, and heads straight down to DTD to spin it up on the 1-2 game. It's currently in Top 10 downloaded!
