The cruise control story is an urban legend, but the McDonalds coffee one is true.

Twats. I bet they used hard concrete and tarmac for the car park and then neglected to pad it with pillows.
It reminds me of the answer a computer gave when asked the question "How can cars be made safer?" Answer: Remove the wheels.
the pathways in the carpark are actually monoblocked, which im sure everyone will agree is treacherous when it gets icy.

have decided i am going to give them a call tomorrow, and speak to the manager and discuss in a civilized manner what happened, and basically give them a chance to not mess it up again, if that makes sense.
obviously if that doesnt go well i will take it higher up.

Tell them that you are a finely tuned athlete Laz, and this accident has scuppered any chance you have of making the 4x 100m relay at the Olympics in 2012

Monaaaiii ££££. It's the language they understand. They don't get 'responsibility' and 'duty of care' unless it hits the bottom line. Just like they don't care if you get thin. They just want your monaaaiii! Take some back.

when do we take responsibility for our own actions?
When nobody else has an influence on them. Laz was responsible for his action. The person who sprinkled a bit of grit on the path was responsible for his/hers. Laz's action was to walk to his car. Because of someone making a bad job of gritting a path Laz's action could not be completed safely. If the path was dangerous the gym should've been closed. Either that or they should make it safe. They did neither hence they are liable. In my opinion of course. In court they may not be. If you see a path that hasn't been gritted properly and yet decide to walk along it you choose to endanger yourself. If you freely decide to walk down an icy path and you slip over I don't see who's to blame but you. You could have gone back into the gym and complained and got them to sort it out. But you chose to walk down an icy path and you slipped over. That's it. You don't need to be Ray Mears to know if the path is slippy. I would like to add that the fact I'm the manager of a gym has no bearing on my opinions here.
