And that's exactly why it'll fail. An IPhone does 80% of what this does on something that fits in a pocket. No point having a word processor on something that doesn't have a proper keyboard. Netbook cheaper + better.

and the IPad doesn't have a camera - so the iPhone has that advantage over it.

Can you multi task with netbooks?

Because I just read that you won't be able to have more than one application open on the ipad at the same time - which is pretty bad, but I don't know if that's worse than netbooks or the same?

The iPad doesn't have a camera because Apple want people with an iPad to also have an iPhone, and use that to make phone calls and take photos.

It doesn't multitask because Apple don't want people to use the iPad as a replacement for their Mac desktop.

They don't want people to get an iPad instead of an iPhone or Mac, they want people to get all of them.

Netbooks can multi-task, obviously.  This is a negative aspect of the iphone against some other smart phones.

This ipad will sell, because Apple know how to market - not because it's good or fills a niche (except the niche for people who want an iphone that doesn't fit into their pocket).  It doesn't allow you to multi-account on it either, so the idea that you could have one floating round the house for all to use when needed is lost.  Won't stop it selling though.

It seems it can multitask, but only when using apple apps and not 3rd party apps.

The Register seem to think it's the latest incarnation of a portable telly.

I'm not so sure. I was sceptical about the IPhone, but it now sells pretty much on the back of the App store. What Apple have done there is impressive. So the IPad can run App Store apps, which is obviously a big plus, but there still seems very little reason to get one over an IPhone. From what I've read of it, it's bigger, and that's about it.

I don't really see the point of it.

To me the main failing seems to be the software. The iPhone OS is pretty good for what it is. It lacks features such as multi-tasking (for the most part) but I can live with this because at the end of the day it's a phone. But on a tablet PC which I would expect to be able to use more like a laptop I can't really look past this sort of missing feature.

And on screen keyboards suck. I can't imagine ever using it for anything which requires extensive typing.

So it's basically a bigger iPhone. So what's the point?

Microsoft made so much money from ripping off apple macs that some clever person at apple realised the profit in taking good gadgets and making them easier to use. If you can master technology there are better products and usually cheaper just not idiot proof.

No Flash for it either (like the iphone) - so if it's competing against netbooks, that's another negative for it.
