I've been staying up late everynight since last Friday until around 6am so that I'd get up late and then grind at better times. Only problem with it is I'm at work at 8am tmoro so need to get to sleep much earlier tonight. Only way around it was to go and get some sleeping tablets and hope that helps. So I went down to the local chemist and it went as follows :
Me: "Hello, do you sell sleeping tables"
The lovely lady behind the counter : "Yeah we do, what do you want them for"
Now I have to admit I was slightly confused by the question....
Me: "Ermm, to get to sleep ??"
The lovely lady behind the counter: " Just it could be for sleeping, or it could be for sleep aid, or it could be because your having trouble sleeping"
WTF ??
After a long pause by me...
Me: "I just want them to help me sleep"
The lovely lady behind the counter: "Yeah we have a few different ones, Nytol....
Me: " I'll take the Nytol ones thanks"
The lovely lady behind the counter: "Have you had them before"
Me: "Yeah" This was actually true as I had them in Vegas for the flight back.
The lovely lady behind the counter: "We also have Nytol extra, nightaid, nightsleep" (those might not exist but you get the jist).
Me : "I'll just take the Nytol ones thanks"
She then hands me over 4 different ones " Why don't you take a look and pick one".
Me : "I'll take the Nytol ones"
The lovely lady behind the counter: "Ok that'll be £5"
FINALLY. I get she was just trying to be helpful but ffs.
PS I'm not a "morning" person and I've just getting up.
Well I'd be confused if someone asked me for sleeping tables as well
I'm confused by that comment.

maybe you'd get up earlier if you went to bed at a sensible time. have you tried sleeping tablets?
But I'd be unhappy more as I'm not a morning person.

Would recommend SE Asia mate too and it is much cheaper than some of the other places you have mentioned. Personally I think if you are going to head to the States/Canada the thing to do is start in NY or Toronto and travel down the Eastern Seaboard all the way to Miami or even Key West then maybe head to Costa Rica and then go up the West Coast from there. If you end up in South Florida give me a shout and I will show you around!!!

When people go travelling for a year you find a lot of them end up working in different places to fund their living/travelling. Are you planning to work at all or just fund the whole shabang on savings?

It depends on what ppl think would be needed to fund the "whole shabang". I could could grind a bit online to top up the balance if needed.

Load of info on here:

Average seems to be a grand a month. I personally would want double to have a balla night per week or whatever. Also depends if you are doing campervan, hostels etc etc.

Firstly deffo do it, travelling is the stone cold nuts. I did 6 weeks on the West Coast of the USA on my own for the majority of it and it was fine, though I am fine with my own company. Certainly over there I found just rocking up at any bar, you could get a conversation going the majority of the time and I am normally pretty socially awkward with people I don't know.
Money wise depends how much you want to slum it/restrict yourself. I am a bit of a hotel snob and not a fan of public transport (especially buses) so that costs a bit extra. Also a hire car gives you so much more freedom and options.
I am planning on doing various trips in the next couple of years, deffo Aus/NZ so would be up for the possibility of a joint venture if you fancy.

Sounds good, I should have my laptop sorted tmoro so will be back on msn so will give you a nudge. The hotel thing is in interesting point, I talked to Amatay a bit about it and he said hostels etc are fine and good way to get to know people, obv I won't be staying in hotels for a year as that would be too expensive, sigh that I'm a huge fail at driving.

Get yourself a license now. The States without the ability to drive is a massive pain. When I moved to Antigua I was 27 and couldn't drive and thought I was fine but when I met my wife she ended up teaching me and it gives you so much more freedom.

Try staying sober for a day, you might find it easier.

There is no better feeling than rocking up in a city for the first time, with nowhere to stay and everything new - so liberating.

I did a year in 2007 when I snap resigned the first time at 36, best year of my life by a mile despite being 10-15 years older than most people I met. Agree redarmi, SE Asia is a great option, Thailand especially if Amatay there, Cambodia, Laos and Veitnam cool too.
New Zealand and Aus cool...could do a whole post on NZ but fav bits Queenstown, Kaikora just to swim with dolphins, kayaking Able Tasman, Franz Josef, do Doubtful Sound, awesome and most do Milford, which is good but commercialised.
having just come back from Oz a word of warning, ridiculous expensive at moment there, just unreal - salaries reflect though so if you plan to work with your quake 3 months in Sydney may pay well and set you up for trip. Using UK money doesn't go far at $1.46 at mo.
Id love to chat about this, my fav subject and you'll find most people that have done it say the same. Only other advice, don't overplan! You'll meet people, do things you didn't expcect etc. I'd put 5 big stops in over 12 months, check cost to make changes pre booking and use internal flights. I had a plan and still changed my ticket so many times, often down to meeting a girl lol.
Be in Melbourne January / Feb....Tennis incred, Aussie Millions a real experience and you can nip any of the boys out there if skint lol
