It's a point, but I think it's the audience's fault as much as the filmmakers. I think there are still films being made that are good stories, and make you think, but the vast majority of people are just interested in going to the blockbusters, and I think that trend is getting worse. How many of the top 25 have you actually seen (or even heard of).

Out of that lot, Shutter Island and Kick Ass would be near the top for me. True Grit is superb (only recently seen), but given it's a remake doesn't exactly the count as original. Obviously any sequels can't really come into the "original" category either. But there is still a decent amount of good stuff being made.

and you have a pretty decent selection of memorable stuff. Memento. Up. Eternal Sunshine. Slumdog. No Country for Old Men.

I also rewatched One Flew.. as well. Incredible film. But I'm not so downcast about recent stuff. You just have to hunt for the pearls a bit harder.

Heard of pretty much all of them and seen at least half, not one of them are great films, Shutter Island is good, you really think anyone will watch Kick Ass in five years time nevermind 20 years time ? The fact The Fighter is 13th pretty much proves my point, yeah it's decent as Bale puts in a great performance etc but lacks any sort of originality whatsoever and nothing about it made you actually think. Inception is number 1 and I pretty much agree with that as that did at least have some originalness to it and provoked some thought but it isn't a great film.

Not seen 'The Fighter' yet, but as it's based on Micky Ward's life it's bound to be good.

its quality, defo worth watching.

Shutter Island is good,

I really despised this film, just after I'd watched it.
Don't think it was great anyway (good acting, too ponderous), but had the feeling that I'd just been made a fool of, when it was obvious that I'd invested emotion in caring about stuff that wasn't real.
(Which is  obv pretty silly given that most films aren't real!!).

Majority of stuff by Shane Meadows is decent. Deadman's shoes and a room for romeo brass are both superb and must watches imo also a fan of Paddy Considine.

These two both very good... would recommend.

Haha, agree it isn't great, probably was the best film of last year, I got a bit lost with it in parts tbh.

Errr, that's the point! A good film provokes some kind of emotional response. I don't particularly care what it is, if it provokes a response, I'll call it a good film. Shutter Island was doubly good in that it provokes a caring, sympathetic response through most of the film and (not trying to give spoilers if you've not seen it) this changes by the end. But it doesn't even change suddenly. I thought it was great.

Anyway, back to the pokerz. Sorry.

Amerlie was a great shout early.  Have never watched a film that just made me outright happy like Amelie does....it has a magical quality that is very difficult to explain.  I also am a big fan of Millions by Danny Boyle.
