Against Eli, he should probably bet out as I think he checks top pair a lot of the time. Eli could also have a second pair type hand, so a smallish bet probably would have been an order of the day. It might also induce a bluff raise from a draw. Although the flush draw his the turn, I don't think he has a draw enough of the time to warrant a check, and I can't image Eli floats a lot. I suppose when the eight fell, he felt he needed to act quickly, but, yeah, probably a mistake to check.

I like it against certain players who will valuebet thin. "oh i have top pair and he checked the river, i must bet" I'm not sure if Eli falls into this catergory, but I think the line is perfectly fine against some oppos.

Yes its Ivey in Durrr's heads up match way Sammy G they talk about it and he said that Ivey was looking to buy out for 50k but Durrr wanted to wait so he could get more of Ivey.
