So it's car insurance time again and I thought I'd give these guys a try.

Not bad really. Found a cheaper alternative which I may go to but not sure yet.

Anyway. The point to this post. Usually in my hotmail email account I get about 2 to 3 junk emails per day.

After giving GoCompare my email address last night I find 1 from Gocompare themselves and then 13 from various comanies offering me viagra and replica rolex's.

So screw GoCompare and their email sharing tactics, I'm going elsewhere.

Just a rant. Thankyou for listening.

I use a separate email address for each company/site so I can tell where the leaks come from, can be quite interesting. The viagra etc spam increase can just be due to fluctuations in the activities of botnets.

I also used this site and a couple of others for house insurance and car insurance recently.. never again

I had phone calls from 7 different companys who were top of the list on the sites trying to pressure me to buy.. No spam emails though to be fair

hmm I must have got off lightly - I used them when I changed car insurance, along with a couple of the other comparison site. Only got one phone call (from the one that came out cheapest and who I was going to take the insurance from anyway), and haven't noticed an increase in spam (although to be fair i never check my junk mail, so it may just have been filtered)

As far as I was aware, are all these sites not obliged to give an opt-out of further marketing option? Usually it is a tick box, may be worth checking in future.

That doesn't mean the information finds other ways out of the company.

Electronic mail marketing

The most important thing to remember is that you can only carry out unsolicited electronic marketing if the person you're targeting has given you their permission.
However, there is an exception to this rule. Known as the 'soft opt-in' it applies if the following conditions are met;

•where you've obtained a person's details in the course of a sale or negotiations for a sale of a product or service;
•where the messages are only marketing similiar products or services; and
•where the person is given a simple opportunity to refuse marketing when their details are collected, and if they don't opt out at this point, are given a simple way to do so in future messages

As I said earlier, as far as I am aware, all sites are obliged to provide this opt out and if taken cannot pass your info outwith the company either.

I'm also sure that they are obliged to provide an option for you to opt out of further emails within the emails they send.

Companies get hacked and employees can sell the data without their knowledge, etc etc.

And a site like Go Compare will share your details with all the companies offering the insurance you've been quoted for - so the information is more likely to leak purely because the more companies involved means the more chances it can be.
