saw something at the footy today I don't remember ever seeing before

free kick was given 10 yards in from touch and a defender was standing about a yard away stopping it from being taken. the guy taking the kick started shouting to the ref who was in the middle. instead of going back to the ball and measuring out 10 yards the ref made a signal to the linesman who ran onto the pitch and stood over the ball while the ref instructed the defender to move back. once he was far enough from the ball the linesman went back to his position and the kick was taken

is this some new thing I've never heard of? don't think I've ever seen a lino on the pitch for anything before

Not uncommon, they always stand in front of the ball at corners when the ref is having a word if theres argy bargy in the box...
