I almost had the same rant.

The HMRC do a pretty awesome job and will always sort your problem out, if you know what your talking about. The huge problem is that even though people pay over thousands of their hard earned to them every year, they dont spend an hour learning to understand how it works.

Hmmm, the Inland Revenue will undertake every measure legally that they can to seperate you from your money. However, when you undertake any tax planning measures the government accuses you of tax avoidance (which is perfectly legally) and using "loopholes" (whatever they are) to avoid paying tax.

Received a cheque in the post this morning for the sum of £252.20 for the tax year 09/10. Ship!!

Im owed more for the 08/09 tax year but as i went to Australia to live/work and i dont have details of what i was paid out there, they are still looking into it for me! Fingers crossed for another cheque!!
