Airline passengers are facing massive disruption across the UK after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded planes.
The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace from midday to 1800BST amid fears of engine damage.
Airports operator BAA confirmed all flights at Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick would be suspended from midday.
And in Scotland, authorities have already shut all their airports.
The restrictions, in accordance with international civil aviation policy, were imposed after the Met Office warned ash could clog engines.
Passengers were advised to contact their carriers prior to travel.
Experts have warned that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud would be sufficient to jam aircraft engines.

Eyjafjallajokull is the best name ever for a volcano.

Sent my daughter there last year for a 3 or 4 day school tour. Was €1,400 just for the tour and still had to give her spending money for lunches and whatever!!! GG 2k.

All flights to British airspace have been suspended after ash caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland forced air traffic controllers to restrict takeoffs and landings.
As the cloud travels south , people should stay indoors and close all windows
Radar shows all UK flights diverted to France

Nice scaremongering, Crow. You should write for the Mail.
"The plume is so high that it will neither be visible nor pose a threat to the health of humans on the ground, although Dr Rothery added that we may have a "spectacularly red sunset" on Thursday evening."
Apparently The Moon, Mars and Venus and pretty close at the moment, all setting at once not long after sunset. If the sky is cloudless (apart from the ash, obv), could be an interesting sight.

Those gits in Iceland already owe us a fortune.
That's another £50 they've just had added to their bill for flouting the smoking ban.
Dear iceland,
Don't you think I've had enough trouble with Ash already this year?
Yours sincerely
Cheryl Cole
Dear iceland. We asked you to send your CASH.
We've always been big smokers in our family and we have loads of spare ashtrays.
That's why my mum's gone to iceland.

Relief and aid are unlikely to reach the area for several days... It's not hard to get to, it's just fucking impossible to type into a Sat Nav.

How clear is the sky meant to be at the moment in Nottingham? Is that cloud cover just normal stuff, or related to the volcano?
