only people at the scene pulling the driver out was the traffic police. Other Emergency services not there yet. You may not like them but they will be the first people at the scene

I am alway amazed that the police beat the ambulance to every emergency. Is it just the cynic in me that thinks its so that they can nick you?

It's often Traffic Officers rather than the police.  But if the police do get there first, and help the injured and also collate evidence to determine if there was a crime - where's the problem?  If you are the innocent party you'd surely want the police there as early as possible rather than them arriving late and not being able to gather the evidence required for a successful prosecution?

Could this be that they are driving cars and not van like amulances?

Hmmm. Yeah 175mph+ tuned up volvo hyper mobile vs big van full of kit could have something to do with it.

Possibly also that the ambulance has to come from wherever the nearest hospital is whereas the rozzers just send whoever's closest.

yep, that's why a paramedic in a car normally beats an ambulance to the scene

and the police are already on the road driving around looking for stuff to do. pretty sure ambulances don't do that

Agree.  Although I don't think the motorway is the place where they're most dangerous to others in general.

I do plenty.

I was referring to the fact that most 'accidents' in which someone is seriously injured or killed occur on a and b roads, not motorways.  Pedestrians getting run over, people driving drunk, people driving too fast for the conditions, over-taking on country roads when the situation isn't right for overtaking, etc.

Yes, they get it wrong on a motorway and there's a big multi-car pile-up then it's going to be serious, but these are rarer than the incidents on other roads.

Agreed - if they don't say thank you I wind the window down and shout it to them as they go past.

Also, if they pull over without indicating so I nearly rear end them (obv driving too close but ignore that fact) I'll pull alongside them, wind down the window and innocently, sweetly and helpfully say "Just to let you know I think there is something wrong with your indicators, they didn't come on when you pulled in".  Said in such a nice voice floors them and then I drive off before they can get out and hit me.

As for the police attending an rta quickly to gather evidence to prosecute - eeerm no. Their first action is to protect so they will help people out of vehicles and protect them and the scene, call the appropriate agencies such as ambulance and fire service if they haven't been called already, and generally look after the people involved.

Once the living have been dealt with they will deal with the scene and gather evidence which will help prosecute any potential guilty party that may have caused the accident to occur, this could by a driver or, for example, a vehicle manufacturer. That is essential to the safety of society as a whole imo. At some point the dead will be removed. If there is doubt at the scene they will have been removed to help resusitation, but in the case of obvious death such as decapitation they are more often left to help piece together the reasons for the accident.

Thank goodness for our police force imo.

It helps very much that those involved in the motorway accidents are generally all moving in the same direction.

No, I would say they mainly include twats who sit in the middle lane with nothing in the inside lane, or who decide to pull out without indicating, or once overtaken someone else, need to leave about 400 yards of room before they pull back in again, or who never ever see blue lights behind them and still sit there oblivious (not restricted to motorways ldo, but just unbeleivable that some drivers are that unaware) or lorry drivers who decide they will overtake just at the start of a long uphill section, and proceed to 'overtake' at approx 1 mpn faster than the lorry oin their inside.
