Bristol City fans march over council stadium rejection

Bristol City FC fans rally 25 July 2010 Fans marched for the first time in the club's history to express their disappointment

Bristol City fans have staged a protest against the decision by the council not to allow Sainsbury's to build on the club's current ground.

Hundreds of supporters - and some of the club's players - marched from the Ashton Gate ground to nearby Ashton Vale, where the club wants to build a 30,000-seater stadium.

The £92m stadium depends on Sainsbury's being able to buy land at Ashton Vale.

On Wednesday the city council rejected Sainsbury's application.

Ha ha bit more to it than that, all will become clear over the next few days I would imagine.

But, to say the councillor who chaired the meeting was not very impartial is an under-statement.

The following are facts:

The CHAIR of the South Bristol planning committee is Sean Beynon, who lives in and represents the local ward of Southville. He had to stand down from the planning decision meeting as he is a Bristol City Football Club season ticket holder and therefore he was considered to have a conflict of interests.

The VICE CHAIR of the South Bristol planning committee is Simon Rayner, who represents Kingsweston in the north of the City but lives in Clifton. Neither of which, not that you need reminding, are in South Bristol.

Simon Rayner not only chaired the Sainsbury's application meeting but had a vote, which he used against the plans.
Simon Rayner was also in the minority of 2 out of 9 who voted against the successful application for the stadium itself.
Simon Rayner commented at the time in the media that he did not like football.

Simon Rayner works for Alec French Architects a business who, like George Ferguson, has a commercial interest in alternative opportunities to develop the land
Here's the best bit "Alec French Partnership" and George Ferguson's "Acanthus Ferguson Mann" are well established partners under the name of "Concept Planning Group" who tender for urban planning projects in Bristol.

Simon Rayner's employers "Alec French Architects" and George Ferguson's "Acanthus Ferguson Mann" partnered to win and execute the £90 million taxpayer funded tender to develop @Bristol.

Simon Rayner's employers "Alec French Architects" and George Ferguson's "Acanthus Ferguson Mann" are preferred partners of Westmark Developments, a privately-owned developer in Bristol specialising in, wait for it, residential and mixed use schemes, precisely what George Ferguson advocates and Simon Rayner voted for

This has just been posted on the Bristol City website:

The Music Works is a music company aimed at helping young people achieve life skills through music & most of it's band members are Bristol City Football Fans but more importantly we all live in & around Bristol. We helped the Bristol City Supporters Trust on the open day with a stage & Djs & performers with the likes of local stars such as Reggae Dan Ratchet, D, Red, & Mikee Freedom who charted with the number 1 dance track ( I wanna give you devotion) back in 1991 with Nomad.

Basically we feel very strongly about the terrible decisions made at the council house last week to object to Sainsburys merely moving there store 100 yards down the road to Ashton Gate which would of given Bristol City FC a substantial amount of capital towards the approved new stadium at Ashton Vale.

We feel that strongly that we would like to put on a music event on collage green with local mps & celebrities voicing there opinions live on stage & hope to attract some of Bristol’s other musicians i.e. Massive Attack, Portishead, Ronnie Size, The Wurzels as well as many talented young people who are involved in some way with sport or football to show the councillors & local mps just how much good football in the community does & benefits our next generation & on that fact alone why it is essential the decision to not allow Sainsburys permit ion to build at the Ashton Gate site be over turned so that Bristol can be known for future generations as a City rich in positive History & not a City that has thrived only on its slave trade days.

This event will have to be organised & may take some weeks to organise so I am asking the supporters club for some help with the organisation & lets hope if all goes to plan we can have a positive & peaceful but effective demonstration of support for the plans for Sainsburys and Support of Bristol City for the new stadium & the Bristol City Councils plans for the new music arena all of these can not happen without the funding capital that would be generated from the new Sainsburys site being approved.

Many Thanks
M. Freedom

Whispers, whispers http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/news/Private-meetings-store-vote/article-2468914-detail/article.html

LIBERAL Democrat councillors held two meetings in private on the day that the Sainsbury's superstore scheme at Ashton Gate was rejected, the Evening Post can reveal.

The five Lib Dems who are members of the Development Control (South and East) committee that refused planning permission met during the afternoon in a room at the Council House.

Later, they met again a few minutes before the start of the meeting in the council chamber at 6pm, which debated the Sainsbury's plan.

Four of the Lib Dems voted in favour of refusal while one abstained. The two Tories voted against and the one Labour member abstained.

Members of planning committees cannot be politically whipped, which means they are not allowed to vote along party lines.

Before the debate began, each of the eight councillors on the committee had to say they had read all the papers and were dealing with the issue with an open mind.

The Tory group's deputy leader Peter Abraham said: "My view is that the decision is suspect and that before the planning refusal is issued, we can look at this again with a planning committee from across the whole of the city."

Senior Lib Dem councillor Mark Bailey, the group's chief whip, said: "I can assure you 150,000 per cent that the meetings were absolutely nothing to do with pre-determining the decision."

Planning expert Mike Orr told the Post: "So long as they didn't decide beforehand how they were going to vote and there was no excessive lobbying, then there is nothing to suggest bias which would invalidate the decision."

City council spokesman Peter Holt said: "It is proper for members to discuss matters before a meeting. I understand they discussed the media coverage of the application, amongst other matters.

"Members have been clear there was, however, no predetermination of the planning application in these discussions. Indeed, this was confirmed by each member before the development control committee started."

A planned meeting yesterday between the football club and the city council was called off.
