Erm, they can be better - in terms of getting more memory, processor speed, etc., for your money. But less useful if you're on a train, want to take your computer into the back garden, etc. Horses for courses really. A Ferrari might be 'better' than a Transit van, until you need to move a sofa and a fridge-freezer...

Acers seem to have a bad rep, but I have bought two and they've been excellent for me.
Try acerdirect.co.uk
The second one I got was an 'A Grade' one. Nothing up with it at all (it hadn't been used, but the box had been opened and so they couldn't sell it as 'new'). Ended up with a laptop that would have been £800+ for £550.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm thinking of getting a netbook. Anyone bought one recently and can recommend one, or should I just look on acerdirect...

Agreed, I've had 3 Acer's now and they've all been super. They're so much better value. I currently have a 5537 which has the Core 2 Duo proc, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, seperate graphics card etc and it was 489+vat from staples 8-9 months ago. The equivalent tosh or sony would have been 700+!! Paul.

the HP pavillions (DV6 and Dv7) are cracking machines. very well put together.
They are seriously heavy though, esp in 17inch format
