lol - the pun wasn't intended, but I did notice it before hitting 'post'  considered amending it, but couldn't be arsed, then considered referencing it, but thought that would be in poor taste, so went with third option of 'hopefully no one will notice'

ok as no one has got the answer i guess ill have to tell you ,it is 27 outs, there is one out that you are all missing because of the way yo see the problem , still to be kind as its xmas ill post the answer in a day or so before xmas

I've changed my mind. You're all wrong. It's 21 outs.

There are 44 unknown cards left, you can't be "behind to your opponent" if you're equal or more likely to win than he is. So 21 is the max number of outs you can have and still be behind.
