Ok, this is probably going to sound stupid, I think the answer might be quite simple.

If I make a big check-raise on, say three diamonds, that's a nuts or air move. I'm polarising my range.

My question is, what's the opposite of polarise? If I want to bluff someone off a wider range, I'm probably best making a medium size lead, giving myself a much wider range.

But what's the word for that? Maybe just de-polarise?

You can still merge ranges in situations where you look polarised. Such as check raising 99 on the board above, could be considered a merge

Doesn't that also come under the 'air' bit of 'nuts or air'?

And I have seen plenty of players make a big CR with a small flush there, believing it to be the 'nuts' bit of 'nuts or air'

The reason why its a merge is occasionally people fold better and call with worse.

Id say 77 is probably a better example on that board, because people might bet fold an 8, or bet call a 6 depending on the action.

Interesting little thread. I known along time what polarising your hand means and i guess i've also known what a merge is although until reading this i didnt know that was the name of it. I recently saw A E Jones refering to the term merge on the big game with DN and thought wtf is he on about
