So today is the start of my new healthy living regime.  Everybody seems to be trying to be healthy at the moment and I'm very much a bandwagon type of guy.  That and I'm getting married next year (not to cos sadly) and I would like to drop a few stone and find a decent wig, I don't want to lose 5 stone in 5 weeks or anything silly just eat a bit better and do more exercise.

Today is my last day off before going back to work tomorrow, I have used this last day of freedom well.  Got up at 11am, went to the gym to enquire about membership and played abit of PLO.  As I like highlighting things I'm going to break my day up as I want to tell my avid readers about my experiences of Wed 5th Jan two thousand and eleven so far.

GYM

I have been shopping around for a Gym for a while now, my main requirement is a decent pool and not too expensive.  My local Gym is LA Fitness, although the pool is only 15m I would join due to location and will use other Gym facilities.  That was my thought as I went to meet Shaun from the 'membership team', all Shaun had to do was an OK job and I will sign up.  Unfortunately Shaun did not do an OK job.  He did a terrible job.  All I wanted was no sign up fee and no long tie ins.  I volunteered this info to Shaun he obviously did not listen.

He took me round and tried to built excellent rapport, constantly saying things from his training manual that were intended to make me feel at ease and like him.  They did not have the desired effect as he kept fucking up his script, repeating himself and asking me questions then looking away when I answered.  Nevermind I thought, as long as its less than £45 a month I will prob sign up as it looks nice enough and is clean.

We sat down for his close, I'm excited to here what he has to offer as although I have asked a couple of times what the fees are Shaun has informed me that they tailor a package to suit the member!  Great news, I had told Shaun no sign up fee or tie in is my priority and use of the pool is a must, he is going to hit me with the perfect deal for me and I will snap his hand off.  Here goes, I can see Shaun gearing up for the big sell, he starts with an open question;

"Tell me what do you think of the facilities?"

Great question from Shaun, this will get me to reconfirm all the things I like and give him all the buying signals you wants, bearing in mind that at this point I actually want to sign up and then he ruins it...

"I know its small but its not that busy is it?"

My response - No.

He turned a wonderful question into a terrible one in 3 short seconds.  Nevermind, I am keen to hear about the no joining fee no tie in that I had my original leaflet about...Shaun is ready to tell me the price.

"Right the most expensive option is the no tie in option, its £50 a month with a £40 joining fee."
"OK... what other options do you have"
"well if you sign up for 24 months its only £37 a month"
"not really looking to sign up for a long contract"
"OK how about 12 month contract no sign up fee £45 a month"
"Again not really what i was looking for Shaun"
"I tell you what, I will go speak with the manager he will do you a little deal"

Wait 5 mins although it felt like a lifetime - its worth it though as I will get the great deal offered by the manager.... Shaun's back!!

"OK what we will do is £40 a month 12 month contact"
"Never mind Shaun, I will leave it going to sign up to a gym near work that has a 25m pool"
"but do they give you a free coaching session and a workout plan"
"I don't want a free coaching session"
"really!  It will help you work towards your training goals"
"I will give you a call Shaun"

He really did fk up the whole process which now means I'm going to use the council pool which isn't that bad and look into the swimming pool and Gym near work.

PLO

Played 4 tabs for a bit, won a couple of buy ins @ 15c/25c.  I like PLO but am rubbish at it.  Hopefully will play more and be better at it.  Cos my hero and best friend helped me with a little sweat session playing HU PLO Cap which really helped.  Need to do some more though as although I did win a few $$$ I'm terrabad...

Thanks for the feedback Celtic its what makes this Diary work.

is 12 months a "long term sign-up"? Pretty standard unless you want to go "Pay as you go" which is almost always more expensive if you go 3 times+ a week.

Just sign up for 12 months...and indeed tell them to stick the sign-up fee...it's ridic that they even charge it.

I don't think it is long term really but I got a fancy leaflet saying that we could join up for free on a pay as you go basis.

I actually went to the Bodyline gym (nice way of putting leeds city council sports centre) and although its no where near as nice as the proper gym the pool is much bigger and I will probably just pay per session there until I know I'm going to do it on a regular basis.

I always chop and change my mind so really dont want to be paying £40 a month for 12 months, that is money I can be losing at poker!

There seem to be a few cheaper chains opening up like The Gym Group and Pure Gym e.g. http://www.puregym.co.uk/Pure-Gym/Leeds.

No pool but only £17/month, no contract and open 24/7.

I live quite a bit out of the city centre but going to enquire at a few gyms near where I work. Might also sign up for bodyline.
