Obviously attacking Alex in his own diary and in such a personal way is totally out of order and I don't condone it in the slightest. I've got a lot of enjoyment from reading this blog and Alex seems like one of the good guys to me.
But as Tikay suggests there is a nugget of something interesting in what he has to say. I've met a lot of poker pros, especially some of the big US stars, who undoubtedly have taken risks, played above their roll etc safe in the knowledge they have the parachute of rich parents. The same is true in business without a shadow of doubt.
To repeat I'm not saying Alex is one of them, I just thought it was an interesting point. Maybe just to me...
Well there we have a great example of the ovarian lottery, Alun is Welsh.
Just imagine the heights he may have scaled if he were English.
PS - In case anyone here lacks a s-o-h, here's the smiley.

Of course the opposing argument would be that it's more difficult for Alex because his parents expect him to succeed.
He is always going to be under pressure to make good on his privileged start and expensive education.
Tough gig IMO.
I came from a relatively privileged middle class background. My dad came from a council estate in Newport. I don't doubt for a micro-second whose life was easier and had more opportunities. Although that said my dad still achieved more than me

Imagine what poor Ian Gascoigne must feel.

Haha! I'm partly English, I've always felt that has held me back.

Time to go time.
Similar background to Alex, but mangled the hand.

The greatest, and hitherto unnoticed, irony of this whole piece is the tacit acceptance that Alex is
actually
posh.
I mean, really?? He's not a member of the Pitt, he doesn't have a title, I'd be willing to wager he's never even had a fag warm the loo seat for him in the morning.
Affluent-middle maybe, but 'posh'? Darrrrling, purrlease.

Good point, but I'm not sure the degree of affluence is really the key metric under discussion here.

But he didnt, he dropped out of university and they were ok with it in the end, regardless of the fact he wasnt using his expensive education.

Say what you like, but please don't quote my argument where I specifically said I wasn't talking about Alex to endorse your point. Thanks

Note to Alex.
Go away more often. This Diary livens up a treat in your absence.

Don't quite know what that means - I think we've had a fascinating debate, all very civil, too.
