I think you played it fine.  Not sure how he ever shows up with a nine here although to be fair if he is a thinking player you don't that often either.  I do this a great deal on four to flush boards and you really do get them to fold often enough to make these kind of plays profitable especially at these levels.

i had a cool similar hand in a cash game the other day where its a single raised pot 5 way 44664 checked to the river somone bet £25 into £130, i made £275 and they all folded, wiiiiiiiii

I understand the reasoning now Outragous76.  As other have said too, i guess over a long run you'd be in a EV+ situ.
