2011 World Series of Poker
Event #13: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout

Andrew Badecker Wins $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout

What started with 1440 people and 160 tables is now just 1 person left with a bracelet. Andrew Badecker had to win a nine-handed table, a ten-handed table and a 16 person sit 'n' go that included the likes of Frank Kassela, David Pham, Dan Kelly, Erik Cajelais, Lars Bonding, and Vitaly Lunkin.

Badecker entered the official final table of nine the chip leader and essentially dominated the whole way. There were a couple points where he lost the chip lead, but he quickly got it back and took down his last table in style, including this hand he played against fellow chip leader Daniel Makowsky when they were all three handed.

Preflop, Badecker raised from the small blind to 75,000 and Makowsky re-raised in the big blind to 175,000.

The flop came {3-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and Badecker led out with a check. Makowsky bet 200,000 and Badecker check-raised to 450,000. Makowski called.

The turn came {K-Diamonds} and Badecker bet out for 380,000. Makowsky then announced all in (for a total of 1,600,000) and Badecker quickly called.

Badecker flipped over {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} for a flopped flush and Makowsky showed {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}. Once Makowsky called, it was over as he was drawing dead.

At that point, Badecker took a three to one chip lead over Robbie Verspui going into heads-up play and never looked back.

Although Badecker is our 12th straight first time bracelet winner, it is rare to see such a stacked field in the final 16 of a No-Limit event at the World Series, so we know Badecker can play and that we will see him around again for sure. Congratulations Andrew Badecker, you are a World Series of Poker Champion!

2011 World Series of Poker
Event #17: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E.

Day 1 of Event #17: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. is in the books. A field of 963 runners came out for competition in this 2011 World Series of Poker gold bracelet event and at the end of the day, under 200 players remained. Topping them all was Eli Elezra with a field-leading 92,100 in chips.

Plenty of big names came out for this event as it was the only event that kicked off today. Some of those included in the field throughout the day were Bill Chen, Tom Dwan, Jerry Buss, Ville Wahlbeck, Noah Boeken, Jeff Madsen, John Racener, Gavin Smith, Jean-Robert Bellande and David Benyamine. Unfortunately for those players, they failed to make it through the day.

Ashby Leads a Stacked Final Nine

Well, what a showcase of poker this $10,000 2-7 Draw Championship turned out to be!

Our starting field of 126 was reduced by a third after one day of play, and the survivors returned to the felt today for a brisk day of lowball action. From top to bottom, the field was stacked thicker than any event we've seen yet at this Series. Steve Zolotow, Dan Smith, Ville Wahlbeck, Steve Billirakis, Michael Mizrachi, Bill Chen, Erik Seidel, Joseph Cheong -- those were just the players eliminated in the first couple levels of this star-studded Day 2. Also falling by the wayside were the likes of Eli Elezra, Daniel Alaei, Shaun Deeb, Barry Greenstein, Mike Matusow, Daniel Negreanu, and 2011 bracelet winners Matt Perrins and Eugene Katchalov. Jason Mercier, David Williams, and Huck Seed also went out today, those three all missing the money by just a couple spots.

When the field combined to two tables of seven, everyone was guaranteed a paycheck. The layout of the field was ridiculous -- more fitting adjectives escape us at this twilight hour. The final 14 players had a combined 33 bracelets spread among them, and they included three former WSOP Main Event Champions (Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, Greg Raymer), a WSOP-E Main Event Champion (John Juanda), and the last two winners of this event (Nick Schulman, David Baker).

Even after Chino Rheem and Brandon Cantu hit the rail, that bracelet count was still strong at 31, but the next elimination dashed that number to bits. Johnny Chan was riding the short stack when his {9-}{7-}{4-}{3-} paired on the draw to fall to Baker's queen-low. The end of Chan's bid to tie Hellmuth with eleven bracelets reduced the field to eleven players, but only nine of them hung on for the rest of the level. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Benjamin Parker were cut down in the final few hands, and the Day 3 field is locked with nine players set to return.

Richard Ashby will take the big stack of 700,000 into the final day, and he'll be looking for his second final table of this young 2011 WSOP. Everyone in the field is well accustomed to WSOP final tables, though, and there's really no clear betting favorite. Baker and Schulman are still alive in their bids to win a second bracelet in the same event, and a victory from either of those men would make for fantastic headlines. Perhaps no headline would be bigger than Phil Hellmuth snagging bracelet number twelve, though.

This 2011 WSOP badly needs a big story to rush to the presses, and they may well get one here tomorrow. There are a total of 21 bracelets between the final nine, and of the group, only Joe Cassidy has yet to add his name to the list of WSOP champions.

Day 3 commences at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, and we won't stop until we hand out the bracelet. Until tomorrow, all that's left is goodnight!

1   Richard Ashby   700,000
2   Joe Cassidy   540,000
3   David Bakes Baker   492,000
4   Steve Sung   441,000
5   Hasan Habib   437,000
6   Greg Raymer   355,000
7   Phil Hellmuth   339,000
8   Nick Schulman   306,000
9   John Juanda   171,000

Uber impressive FT. After Ashby, I really would like to see one of the world champs win - Raymer as he is a nice guy and better player than many think (and in my wsop team) and Hellmuth because it would be funny.

Event #15: $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold'em
Day 2 completed
Ten Remain in Event #15; Brian Rast On Top

Another day has been lodged at the 2011 World Series of Poker, and as the railbirds and players exit the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, just ten players remain in Event #15: $1,500 Pot-Limit Holdem.

Kicking off after lunch, 88 players returned to battle it out on day two, and after a quick flurry of eliminations, we were soon in the money when reigning champion James "Flushy" Dempsey was outed to the rail on the bubble when his {A-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} for top pair was out-drawn on both the turn and river when his opponent made both a straight and then a flush.

With players celebrating at their new-found inheritance of WSOP gold, elimination after elimination would see players head to the cashier as John Dolan (71st), Davidi Kitai (64th), Matthew Hawrilenko (62nd), Joe Sebok (60th), Michael Leah (58th), Alessio Isaia (51st), Hoyt Corkins (49th), John Racener (39th), Mickey Petersen (26th), Christopher DeMaci (25th), Randall Flowers (19th) and Christian Harder (17th) all were bounced to the rail.

Eventually play would be halted for the night with a unofficial final table of ten remaining as Brian "tsarrast" Rast amassing a 1,081,000-chip stack to hold the mantle of overnight chip leader. With Allen Kessler, Ali Eslami, Ronald Lee and Ted Lawson all in contention for the $227,232 first prize, here is how they will stack up tomorrow.

1   Dajuan Whorley   USA   85,000
2   Daisuke Endo   Japan   174,000
3   Ted Lawson   USA   140,000
