john Juanda Spoils the Party, Wins Event #16: $10,000 2-7 No-Limit Draw ($367,170)

Event #16 is over here just shortly after the midnight hour in Las Vegas. John Juanda has just been handed a WSOP gold bracelet for the fifth time in his career, overcoming a big heads-up chip disadvantage to claim the title in what is arguably the most entertaining event of the Series.

Some would say it was meant to be Phil Hellmuth's 12th bracelet party today, four years to the day after he snagged number eleven. Doubters flocked to the rail from the start of play, but Hellmuth stood tall as seven players fell by the wayside. His play was mostly stellar through the first half of the day, and he amassed a huge chip lead as the players dropped one by one. Among them were the 2009 and 2010 champions of this event, Nick Schulman and David Baker, exiting in fifth and sixth places, respectively. The 2004 champion of the whole darn WSOP, Greg Raymer made it to this final day too, but he would fall in ninth place even before the last eight were relocated to the main stage.

Today's story truly was a memorable one, and you'd do well to read back through the blog if you missed any of the action. At the dinner break, Hellmuth had more than 2.6 million of the 3.8 in play with three players left. Juanda knocked Richard Ashby out in third place shortly after they returned, though, and he had his sights fixed firmly on Hellmuth's stack.

When heads-up play began, Hellmuth still had about a 3:1 chip lead, but Juanda's edge in skill soon began to show through. He picked away at Hellmuth's stack with methodical precision, and the two locked horns in an hours-long tug of war. Many in the poker world consider Juanda to be one of the best 2-7 no-limit players in the world, and he proved that reasoning valid tonight, pressing Hellmuth into a corner as the levels wore on.

It was more than three hours of heads-up play before the final series of hands began to unravel. Hellmuth was showing signs of increasing frustration over the last hour or so, and Juanda thrived on the opportunity to quietly get under his opponent's skin. After fighting with such a strong pose for so long, Hellmuth began to look a bit downtrodden and unpleasant, sinking in his chair and mumbling under his breath. In the final hand, he got his money in pat with a queen, and Juanda drew live to his jack to lock up the bracelet. Hellmuth was sincere in his congratulations, it appeared, admitting he was scared of Juanda's heads-up game.

John Juanda finished in fourth place the last two years in this event, and he began this final day dangerously short on chips at the bottom of the heap. Apparently the third time's the charm. Nine hours later, he sits alone at the table with all 3.78 million chips in play. And a shiny new bracelet. It's number five in his career, and it comes with the extra bragging rights of denying number twelve for Mr. Hellmuth.

Event #18: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em
Day 1 completed
Kenny Nguyen is Day 1 Chipleader in Record Field

Day 1 of Event 18, $1,500 No Limit Hold’em, set the WSOP record for the single largest field ever in a $1,500 event, breaking the record set in 2007 by six players. Kenny Nguyen is your Day 1 chipleader with 110,600, followed by Jon Lane, Stewart Stone and David Briedes - all breaking the 100,000 mark.

Surviving the day was an accomplishment itself; the field averaged five bustouts every minute. The 490 remaining players will make the push for the money bubble, which is set at 324 players. First place is worth $735,400 alone and just making the final table is a guaranteed $54,936.

Notable players moving on to Day 2 include Erick Lindgren, Erica Schoenberg, Scotty Nguyen, Jean Robert Bellande, Frank Kassela, Christian Harder, Dwyte Pilgrim, Humberto Brenes and Jon Turner.

Plenty of notable players failed to last the day including Tom Dwan, David Benyamine, Michael Mizrachi, Joe Cada, Jason Mercier, the NBA’s Paul Pierce, Alexander Kravchenko, Andrew Lichtenberger and Eric Baldwin.

Event #19: $2,500 Limit Hold'em / Six Handed

Day 1 of Event #19 is in the books, and after eight levels of play, Shannon Shorr is our unofficial chip leader with 47,000 chips.

The field drew 354 runners - 30 less than last year - and attracted a long list of notables including Tom "durrrr" Dwan, Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu, Joe Sebok, Maria Ho, David Williams and many more. Those names all failed to reach Day 2 however.

There are a handful of players still in contention for the $213,431 first-place prize however. 2009 WSOP Limit Hold'em World Champion Greg Mueller survived the day with 41,700 chips, his good friend and fellow countryman Shawn Buchanan (45,200) also made Day 2, and so too did Michael "Squeakzilla" Winnett (38,000), Isaac Haxton (39,000), and David Benyamine (28,400).

Aaron Steury Wins $1,500 H.O.R.S.E Championship ($289,283)

After three days of grueling completion which saw 963 runners attempt to navigate the mine field that is mixed game play, we have crowned a new $1,500 H.O.R.S.E champion at the 2011 World Series of Poker. Aaron Steury has captured his first gold bracelet, along with a prize of $289,283 for his triumph, and while every WSOP championship is well deserved, this one holds a special meaning for the victor simply because of the sheer difficulty of claiming the title. The 24-year old Steury, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, defeated 35-year old Honolulu native Michael Chow in a spirited heads-up duel to earn the crowning achievement of every poker player’s career.

With decorated professional players sprinkled throughout every table, each proficient in the five poker disciplines which comprise this event, Steury had to prove his mettle time and time again against the best in the business. World class players like Eli Elezra, Layne Flack, David Bach and Victor Ramdin all made deep runs but eventually fell short in their quest for gold and glory. Ramdin reached our final table but was eliminated in ninth place.

Steury bested eight other competitors during the mentally demanding final table marathon which lasted for more than five hours. To achieve this feat, Steury had to exhibit a mastery of Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo Split Eight or Better, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Stud Eight or Better during three intense days of poker action. He will take home $289,283 for the win and his name will forever be etched in poker's stored history books.

Event #20: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em
Day 1 completed
Doug Lang Is Chip Leader At End Of Day 1

The Rio was filled to the brim with players for today's Day 1 of the most recent $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em. What started with 3,175 is now only 342 and at the end of Day 1 we are only 20 players from the money. Our chip leader (and as far as we can tell the only player over 100,000 chips) is Doug Lang with 119,700. Justin Sloan also came close to the 100,000 mark with 99,400. The story of the day however has to be PokerStars Team Pro Lex Veldhuis who was down to only 800 chips early on but ended Day 1 with 73,000 and near the top of our counts.

Other notables making it to Day 2 are Amnon Filippi (65,400), Yuval Bronshtein (52,400), John Phan (42,700), Jason Somerville (36,500), Scott Montgomery (32,500), Tim West (26,000), Taylor Paur (25,000), Shaun Deeb (24,000) and Gavin Smith (9,000).

Notables who didn't make it to Day 2 include, Matt Jarvis, Randall Flowers, Galen Hall, Joe Cada, Faraz Jaka, Jeff Sarwer, Antonio Esfandiari, Josh Brikis, Scotty Nguyen, Justin Young, Jeff Madsen, Liv Boeree, Eric Baldwin and many others.

Like we said, we are only 20 players from the money, so we can assume it will be an intense start to Day 2.

Top Chip Counts
1    Doug Lang    119,700
2    Justin Sloan    99,400
3    Lex Veldhuis    73,000
