I disagree.  I think a fair number of sat winners (not all obv) treat the £20-£40 spent on a sat into the £300 deepstack as a casual bet like doing a football coupon etc.  If they were given the chance to close out their football coupon with one game to go to win £9k most casual gamblers would probably choose to do this.

this is not +ev, so imo starts a vicious circle.

Correct but not everyone who gambles does so for +ev spots and when they have a chance to win relative big money locking in a profit at what seems a -EV spot in pure theory can actually be +EV if you consider the uses of the cash won to save on loan/interest payments etc.  The vast majority of people consider casual forms of gambling as entertainment not investment.  Playing a £20 sat to have a shot at the big time (for most people playing the £300 at dtd would be their biggest live event ever played) then the ability to make a five figure sum whatever the EV of the deal makes a lot of sense
