They say things come in threes.  Well, that's what they say in Ireland anyway.  Especially when it comes to death.  Turns out, they're right.

While we were in Las Vegas in November, I got word from Sarah.  Baby had died.  For those of you who don't know, Baby was far from a 'baby'.  She passed away at the age of 98. Nobody in the village called her by any other name.  When I first moved to England, I had only a few photos with me.  One was placed right near the telly from day one.  It's a photo of Sarah, Baby and I.  I was mad about that woman and sorry I wasn't there for her when she died.

Last week my father-in-law passed away.  He'd fierce health problems with the past 13 years so when I was told he wasn't doing well, I just thought they were in drama mode again.  I was wrong.  When the news came in, I was obscenely upset I hadn't been there to tell him one last time how much he meant to me.  But I was delighted I'd spoke to him since moving to England and we'd made our peace.  After speaking to the mother-in-law and getting her blessing, I flew over last week for his funeral.  In the last 3 years I've faced 4 of the 5 hardest times in my life.  This rated as second after having to leave my kids.  He was the only father I've known.

I landed back in Ireland again today for the already scheduled visit.  No sooner was I off the plane and I got word that Bridget's nan had passed away.  Truth be told, she and I have kind of distanced since my move, but I know how much she adored her nan and wouldn't wish it on her or anyone.  Her nan was in the 90's as well, so she had a great long life of it.  Can't complain.

I just find myself appreciating life a goodly bit more lately with all their passings.  Also appreciate the rare time I have with my kids now probably more than I would if I were still living here.  Kinda of sad but true...you don't always appreciate what you have 'til it's gone.

Next time your nearest and dearest is giving you hassle...smile.   Be glad you have them there to upset you.  Because I promise you'll be more upset when they're not there.

That's a hat? It looks more like a merkin.

First thought was, "Oh god, I hope not!"

Followed by a confused, head tilting ever so gently to one side, kinda look while I wondered if I'd been whooshed.

Then I googled to be sure.

WTF man?!

You must have some pretty hefty hats in your part of the world.
