OK, so let's pretend that the story is true, that a Romanian Gypsy family has broken into someone's home, taken it over, stolen whatever they wanted and trashed the rest AND that they are part of a Romanian Gypsy gang that do this as a matter of course.

Would some of you still try and excuse this?

Nobody in the thread has excused the act itself.  We are just questioning whether the fact that they are Gypsies is relevant.  Most squatters in this country are white and British but the Mail doesn't, as far as I know, write stories about that and if they did it wouldn't refer to their race.  Have you ever seen the headline "women comes home to find family of white celts in her living room"?

And also question whether they were Gypsies - the sole evidence for it seems to be that the next door neighbours said that they were.

Given that racism against Gypsies is rife in Romania, there's a pretty fair chance that a random Romanian would probably illustrate the fact that they are 'bad people' by assuming and calling them Gypsies.

Well if the pictures are real I don't think that there is much doubt.

I wouldn't mind having a side bet with you on that.  If those pictures are the people in question i would say there is very little doubt that they are from Eastern Europe or possibly parts of North Africa.  They could quite easily be Albanian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Moldovan, Bosnian or Serbian.  Other than the say so of the neighbour there doesn't seem to be much evidence at all that they are Gypsies but even if they are the point is that that should and does not define them.

 It is a bit like when football hooliganism was at its worst and normal English families would go abroad and the Italians/Spanish/insert whichever country you like didn't like the English tourists because of what a handful of Liverpool fans had done at Heysel or wherever.  It was stupid to tar an English tourist that wants to visit the Louvre as a lout because some English people once smashed up the seafront in Marseille and it is stupid to tar all Gypsies as bad eggs because a couple once nicked some lead or squatted a house.

why is mine idiotic, dont care who they are or religion , race, colour if someone anyone is squatting in my house i wouldnt stand for it and i wouldnt give a shit about their civil rights to squat

This isn't squatting, it's burglary. You can't break into someone's house when they're out for the weekend and claim squatter's rights.

Good article - I can't remember where the stuff I read was (something like the BBC, or the Telegraph, or the Times ....) so I can't link to it, but it made some of the same points but also illustrated that the Romanian state effectively still sanctions and virtually encourages racism against Gypsies. i.e. That article gives a good guide as to the historical problem, but it won't go away because there's nothing currently around to try and change it.
