Going next year in May with the missus, looking for tips on things to do I may not have thought of (all the standard shit like statue of liberty obv).

It is certainly going to be a 'brit who has grown up watching new york on TV & the movies' type of holiday, so will be looking to visit lots of famous areas from the big & small screen.

Gonna try and watch every type of american sport, schedule and lockouts permitting.

I will be hanging out with a friend who lives there, so he will hopefully help me avoid all the boring tourist crap.

Any suggestions?

For the most part, stick with your friends who live there.  So many things change year to year and locals know best in New York.  They'll know all the latest great places to go and things to see, apart from the obv tourist spots.

yeah we are doing the cruise and probably not going on the island, I merely mentioned that one to represent all the bog standard site seeing

Also went with the missus and was probs are best hols ever. If you want a drink or whatever in the Plaza hotel from home alone you are best to book in advance. My fav thing was Madison Square Gardens. Immense!! Check whats on and Book tickets before going out there as to not get grimmed.

Liked the Ripleys Believe it or not museum but that is a standard tourist trap. FAO Schwarz with the piano from Big is pretty sick.

Brooklyn Bridge Park  and i think its called South sea port or something are great places to see the Brooklyn Bridge. Also a couple of shops at the port.

South Street Seaport is nice.  Keep in mind it's hopping from 4pm - 7pm Monday - Friday because it's near the Financial District and all the suits go there for drinks after work.  It's a ghost town and best avoided at night though as everyone heads further into the city.

Greenwich Village was always my abso favourite place to hang out, day or night, when I lived there.  You'll find this place maybe a bit pricey for what ya get, but it's quirky for a change

True dat.  Lots of cool places to hang out in the Village really and hard to go wrong with most.  The Scrap Bar and Delia's Supper Club were my main haunts back in the day, but they've both closed down since.  Sigh.
