He's just got married so I'd imagine anything honeymoon like is on the agenda.

Not been but been told Santa Barbara and Carmel are very nice.
Santa Monica is a good place to stay in LA and its easy to get around by car from there to most places. You don't really need a car in SF if that helps? Public transport is excellent.

California is an awesome place and pretty much has everything you could want from a holiday. The only place I wasn't keen on was L.A, mind you I had a massive cold when I was there.
I would fly to San Francisco spend a few days there at the start or end (or both) then hire a car.
I would recommend Route 1 (Pacific coast Highway) all the way to L.A possibly one of the best scenic drives in the world specifically the big sur bit between Monterey and Pismo.
Stops I did when I did it were Santa Barbara, which has cool Spanish architecture everywhere the Courthouse is well worth the visit. I would imagine it is a very nice place to live. Pismo beach which a small typical Californian coastal town, Clam capital of the world so clam chowder in a bread bowl is a must (though I thought the Chowder in Boston was better). Lastly I stopped in Monterey which is famous for Cannery Row, apparantly the Aquarium is really good. Also there is 17mile drive(think it is 17!) which is where Pebble beach golf course is.
Other things which are really good in California are San Diego, just a really cool city imo and the weather is the nuts. Yosemite is a must in my book, it is about a 250 miles from San Fran but you would want at least a full day there if not more. Also there is the much underrated Kings Canyon and Sequioa national park to the south of Yosemite.
Things I haven't done but will be in about 3 weeks time is Redwood National park in the north and wine country Napa etc.
Oh and deffo do Alcatraz when in SF, but make sure to book online in advance as it sells out before the day often.
Any more detailed stuff on most of the places I can do, if you need it.

If you want to visit somewhere between LA and SF, try Hearst Castle. Incredible place.

thanks folks. Flying into LA in the morning, we have some relatives there we need to drop in on. Then off to SF up the pacific coast high way, and then hopefully get some yosemite kind of area in and back to LA to get the return flight.
if anyone comes up with anything else or wants to expand on what they've said its most welcome.

Loads to do in San Fran and you don't need a car. As others have said Alcatraz is a must and I would also suggest Golden Gate Park, particularly the Japanese Tea Garden. China town is a must too and try and eat where the locals eat rather than a touristy place.
If you can afford it I would get a cabin in Yosemite and spend at least few days there. One of the best places in the world IMO.
If you are going up via Highway 1 (the best way) then Hearst Castle is a must.
Carmel is nice, particularly if you hate chain stores and high rises. If you are in that area and into Aquariums then Monterey Bay is one of the best. If you are into guns the Winchester House/museum is going to be for you and even if your not its worth a visit if you have the time.
You don't say how long you are going for but if you have time to travel east a bit then stay at Lone Pine after Yosemite and go through Death Valley the next day. If you have time Scottys Castle is a nice detour and worth a visit. Bodie ghost town is out of the way also but worth the trip. If you are planning on going into Arizona and/or Utah then of all the canyon Bryce is the best IMO.
I could go on and on.... having spent about 7 weeks in total over there I have only scratched the surface.
Enjoy!
