A poker tournament based solely on skill rather than luck?

Well that's what International Poker Federation are hoping to achieve in the inaugural Duplicate Poker Nations Cup that will take place at the EDF Energy London Eye from 17th November.

The unique concept will see players, “dealt exactly the same cards in exactly the same position on neighbouring tables. With all players in a particular seat given the same allocation of cards the only determining factor in the result of the tournament is how skilfully each player uses them.”

A total of 72 players from 12 countries including the UK, USA, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland and Brazil will compete in the Nations Cup with each contest taking place in a single pod of the London Eye so no information can be shared between the tables.

“The Nations Cup will be a genuine celebration of all that is best in intellectual sports. Some of the world’s best players playing for pride and the honour of representing their countries in an intense competition with the added spice of international rivalry,” said, International Poker Federation President and Big Deal author Anthony Holden.

“Poker is played by millions around the world and Duplicate Poker is the game in its purest form. Players compete against each other based on skill, without any fluctuation in chance. I believe that it’s the best way to highlight poker as a game of strategic skill and as a Mind Sport. The Nations Cup will be a genuine celebration of all that is best in intellectual sports with the added spice of international rivalry.”

Taking place shortly after the Duplicate Poker Nations Cup is the IFP World Championship aka “The Table” at London's County Hall starting on 19th November. The $500,000 event is an invitation only affair which will see 130 of the best tournament players in the world battle it out for a first prize of $250,000.

Cool idea I guess especially playing it in the London Eye.

Obviously after hand 1 when all the stacks are different there's a whole new determining factor as to the winner but I think I kind of like it.

what a sick idea lol hilarious

ofc it can't really work because how have the cards been designated? everyone has the same amount of winning showdown hands? because board run outs etc + this won't be as true a test of skill as a test of who can understand the formula of this format better + exploit it that way.

so there is still a LOT of luck involved, mainly in what seat you draw?

The way duplicate poker used to work on the site that had it was that stacks would be reset at the start of every hand.

Winner is instead determined by the number of points you score in each hand compared to the person who is sitting in your seat at every other table.

So if I'm in seat 5 and get KK beaten by AA but get away from the hand at some point, whereas everyone else in my seat at the other tables does their stack then I get lots of points. I will, in fact get more points that the guy who had AA against me, as he won fewer chips than all the other players who had AA v KK.

All decks are stacked the same - same starting cards and flop/turn/river.

This is obviously vital.

If Mr brilliant at poker gets dealt a cooler hand against Mr Fish on one table but it goes the other way on another table then Mr brilliant doubles up on one table and dominates and gets ko'd on the other table.

Doesn't matter how good you are. If it's cold it's cold.

think its an amazing idea at its simplest form.

Assuming all the boards run out the same, reckon it could make for some superb watching.

But as mentioned before how do they determine the % of hands to each person, even if this is pre determined it will fluctuate as people exit etc.

fun to watch/play though. Would like to give it a go online.

I understand they got the idea of a game involving a stacked deck after an unprofitable night at Gala Nottingham.
