The previous record field for a WSOPE event was set in 2009 when JP Kelly beat out a 608-strong field for the £1,000 NL event at The Empire. Over the past two days, the second event of the WSOPE in Cannes – a €1,090 NL affair – attracted 771 players over the course of two opening flights, smashing the previous record.
Just 104 players survived Day 1a or Day 1b, among them Toby Lewis, Randy Dorfman, Erik Cajelais, Eoghan O’Dea, Matthew Waxman, Peter Jetten, John Eames, Vanessa Selbst and Roberto Romanello. Overall chip leader heading into Day 2 is Australian player Andrew Hinrichsen, who turned his 3,000 starting stack into a staggering 63,900.

Day 2 begins today with the remainder of the huge field playing down into the money. The winner is set to walk away with €148,030

Eames and Romanello in the final of event 2

2011 World Series of Poker Europe
Event #2: €1,090 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 2 of the €1,090 "European Stimulus Special" is in the books, and we're down to our final nine.

The day began with 104 hopefuls still in contention, but the eliminations came brutally quick in the early levels. Peter Jetten couldn't make it out of the first hand of the day, though in fairness to him, he only had 6,000 chips when play began. Other early casualties included Dan Shak, Farzad Bonyadi, Richard Toth, and France's newest WPT champion Matt Waxman.

For a while, it looked like we were pushing toward a stacked final table, but the middle levels were equally cruel to the remaining familiar faces. Vanessa Selbst had her queens cracked by ace-queen to all but end her day, and she followed her pal Kevin MacPhee out the door with a middling cash. Other notables to fall by the wayside with small cashes were McLean Karr, Tyler Kenney, Nicolas Chouity, Toby Lewis, Dan Kelly, and November Niner Eoghan O'Dea.

That leaves us with just nine, and it's Italy's Gianluca Speranza out in front with 757,000. He'll have to deal with a tough cast of characters, and Andrew Hinrichsen might be the betting favorite with one day left. He begins in second place with 434,000, and he's followed by another tough player, Roberto Romanello. The Welshman had an above-average stack for the bulk of the day, but a late clash with Speranza cost him nearly half his stack.

The end-of-day chip counts are posted below

1    Gianluca Speranza    757,000
2    Andrew Hinrichsen    434,000
3    Roberto Romanello    253,000
4    Nabil Nedjai    250,500
5    Eric Baudry    232,000
6    Tarcisio Bruno    153,500
7    John Eames    106,500
8    Gregory Lejolivet    95,000
9    Bernard Guigon    53,000

1          148,030
2          91,262
3          67,281
4          50,146
5          37,874
6          28,977
7          22,449
8          17,608
9          13,982

How can it be a huge chip lead 3handed if he didn't have half the chips in play?

what part of that suggests that he didn't?

e.g. bax 70%, dempsey 26%, random 4%; doubles up dempsey in a 52% pot

Congratulations to Andrew Hinrichsen, Event #2 Champion! (€148,030)

It's all over but the shouting and the passing of the proverbial sugar. In just over seven hours of play today, Andrew Hinrichsen has completed his quest to achieve poker's most iconic prize, a piece of WSOP gold, adding nearly €150,000 to his pockets in the process.

When the day began, Hinrichsen was second in chips, though still a long way behind chip leader Gianluca Speranza. And the Italian was flexing that chip lead in the opening levels. Speranza was responsible for the elimination of the ninth-place finisher Gregory Lejolivet in the first few minutes of the day, and he won a big flip with ace-king against pocket fives to send Eric Baudry out in sixth place. That gave him more than half the chips in play with five left, but his lead was anything but safe.

Five-handed play lingered for a while before the table was able to bid farewell to a dangerous Welshman. Roberto Romanello came into this final table just eight players away from his first bracelet, and it would have made him only the fifth player to achieve poker's elusive Triple Crown. The day did not go as he had dreamt about last night though, and he soon found himself all in with his ace-deuce in awful shape. Bernard Guigon's ace-king was too much in the end, and Romanello was forced to settle for a consolation prize of €37,874 -- though it likely wasn't much consolation.

Guigon was next to fall in fourth place (at the hands of Speranza), and the final three broke for dinner in a near deadlock for the chip lead. When they returned, things began to go south for Hinrichsen. Pot after pot was pulled from him, and he soon found himself badly in need of a double-up with just over 200,000 chips. Soon thereafter, though, he found that lucky double when his {9-Hearts} {10-Hearts} flushed Speranza's {A-Hearts} {10-Spades} to keep him afloat. He continued to chip his way up close to 650,000 when he played another decisive, double-up-or-go-home pot. It was a flip with Speranza, and the {10-Hearts} {8-Hearts} of Hinrichsen managed to outrun his opponent's pocket fives to give him the chip lead for the first time.

It wasn't much longer before the end came. In the last hand, Hinrichsen took Speranza to Valuetown with {A-Spades} {K-Spades}, and he ended up out-kicking his opponent on a king-high board to seal the deal. Speranza looked less than thrilled as they announced his name in second place, good enough for a big five-figure score.

So then, Australia has another gold bracelet to add to its tally. That's six by our count, and this one moves Hinrichsen into Australia's all-time Top 25 winningest players. Hinrichsen had a small rail here to support him this week, but he sends his regards to everyone who was rooting for him back home.

The drinks are on Andrew Hinrichsen tonight in Cannes, and Australia's newest bracelet winner has 148,030 new reasons to celebrate.

Day 1 of the €3,200 No Limit Hold'em Shootout has come to an end after the 256 players were reduced to just 30, all of whom are now in the money and guaranteed to take home at least €6,913 for their efforts in this tournament.

The first player to progress from their table was Vanessa Selbst, who overcame the likes of Dominik Nitsche, Lari Sivho and the great Erik Seidel on her way to Day 2. Other notable players who will return for a three-handed shootout tomorrow include David Peters, Taylor Paur, Chad Brown, Tobias Reinkemeier, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Terrance Chan and Freddy Deeb.

Amongst those who bought in but failed to navigate through the extremely tough field included Johnny Chan, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanui, David Williams, Kevin MacPhee, Ben Lamb, Isaac Haxton and Sorel Mizzi.
