1 (80 x 0 + 1) ≠ (40 + 40 x 0 + 1) (80 x 0 + 1) = (40 + 40) x 0 + 1 |

Was playing in a home game saturday and a retired primary school head master wouldn't accept it was 41.
everyone else at the table, once reminded of the Order of Operations or BODMAS agreed on 41.
My 11 year old got it right straight away because she's half a term into secondary (grammar) school and it's already been covered in maths.
It's an intentional "trick question" as it's supposed to make you get it wrong.

The math question in question is surely written down incorrectly?
the 40 + 40 part of it should be bracketed therefore this sum should take priority over the multiplication sum hence making it (40+40) x 0 + 1
Hence the answer IMO is 1

Really? Have you read any of the previous posts? Or is this just a level? I don't need to read any other posts to work out a simple math question, if the equation was written as 40 + (40 x 0) + 1 then the answer would be 41, as its written the answer is 1. maths, not math. and it effectively IS written 40 + (40 x 0) + 1 because that's the default way of doing the equation unless it's written as (40 + 40) x 0 + 1 which is how you're doing it. |

No. Without brackets the multiplication must be carried out first, before any addition. Putting brackets round the 40+40 makes the equation different to what is written. You did read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations ? |

I think some people refuse to accept that maths isn't the same as English language (or most written languages) Just because you read words from left to right, doesn't mean you should read maths problems from left to right. BODMAS is a key part of mathematical 'grammar' - which is most definitely not the same as English grammar |

its all about the brackets IMO
if it was wrote: (40+40) x 0 + 1 then it would be 1
but as it is wrote:
40 + 40 x 0 + 1 the answer is 41
