I love it Red.
All the runners would have logged client nicknames too. One guy basically lived at The Ritz and the only English he knew was football team names and monetery numbers. He had the log name 'smiler' coz he would go to the counter and say his bet ' tottenham hotspurs, 150 5/4' it would take a while to get it authorised and then count the money and the staff would speak to him and because he didnt understand he just smiled and nodded. We had a Fu kin loo kee too, i guess he had a good run when he started betting.

Thing is for a while they were great business for the firms. The British market was the smartest market and the Asian market was just laughable. Man Utd were sometimes half a goal the wrong price. Tony Bloom moving to Asia in like 1997 was the catalyst for the market becoming smarter and even that took a while. I can remember one occasion when MU played Barnsley (who were in the prem at the time) away in a league cup tie and Tony really liked Barnsley and looking back now they would be close to faves for the game but they were 3/4 goals faves for the game and we were laying them and we could have laid £20m if we wanted to. It was an amazing spot and I think close to Tony's biggest bet at the time. It wasn't really until 2001-2002 that people really started exploiting that market and it became the great guide it is now. Of course much of that was down to Tony and then later some that had worked for and with him.

Happy to bow to Tighty's closer Leicester knowledge and kick Blackpool from the portfolio.
Just seen that my team Watford have been busy again with another influx of new signings. To add to the team that beat Birmingham pretty comfortably they have also added:
Casetti (fullback ex Italian international from Roma) Geijo (has a great scoring record in the Spanish second division) Bia (Belgian international winger) Franchone (French full back) Battochio (Argentine holding midfielder)
The first team squad now stands at an incredible 39, which renders them almost immune to injury crisis as the hard season progresses. Not sure the bookies rate them yet (season long spreads still can be bought at around 63 I think which is lower mid table). I think there will be opportunities over the next month to get with them either on a season bet or in individual matches. They will need a few games to bed in but the early signs are promising and the squad depth is immense.
To this can be added Nathaniel Chalobah who is considered one of Chelea's brightest prospects. I feel the time Watford may be value is after the international break coming up as the new players will have 2 weeks to get to know each other and the system, so Bolton away (where I am hoping to get 4/1+) and then Brighton at home the tuesday after.

I am interested by the first goalscorer bet put up by Class but from a slightly different angle. If Cresswell plays up front then its obv value and should be backed but if Southend are having to play a centre half up front should we not be looking to bet Wycombe too?
I will also go on to say that Wycombe are one of our bogey teams - but I'm not confident enough to tip any kind of bet with this information.....use this at your own risk! (Now watch Southend spank them 5-0, Cresswell scoring of course!!) Class - looks like Southend have sold Kane Ferdinand as well today?

Who invented Asian handicaps? I would love to know Keith, do you think many of those early big Asian punters were merely just arbers?
