Not sure if I've told this story on here before but I think it's a goody. A friend of mine at one of the firms told me how they had a punter who was winning bundles. They took a long time wondering whether or not to close him and they gave him the benefit of the doubt. A new bloke joined them from Corals and said "Why are you standing for this guy? He had loads off us and my mate at (some other) firm also told me they closed him and he was a big winner."
This was in the days of 9% betting tax. You could choose in advance whether you wished for all your bets to be tax paid on or tax deducted.
Tax paid on would mean if you bet £100 it was automatically down as £109 (you paid up front).
Tax deducted meant if you had £100 on a 3/1 winner you paid £100 up front but they took £36 if it won (9% of the return).
Clearly if you expected to win you should pay on.
This guy had won a decent 6 figures from the big three and convinced them he was a mug by simply stating when he opened the accounts that he would be tax deducted.

Years ago when i was a student I used to work in the shops of the West End of London for the magic sign. Their premier shop was, and still is I think, in Curzon Street in Mayfair and it had a uniformed doorman and a couple of perks. From opening the general rule was that all of the staff were pretty young girls but one day they were very short and needed someone and no pretty girls were available so they sent me down there and I became the first ever male cashier to work in the shop apparently. Anyway because I liked racing and betting I became relatively popular with the punters down there and was often sent there and got to know a fair few of their punters some of who had a fairly lumpy bet and seemed to have lots of money despite spending all their day in the shop or Aspinalls next door. Anyway every summer this Asian fella would show up for a few months. He always had a fair few larger gentlemen with him who called him sir and when he came in he would hand over a couple of grand and then just punt off that for the afternoon. One day we had done our bollocks to him and the way it works in shops is that when you lose your money then you ask nearby Ladbrokes if they have any. We called around and my old Ladbrokes hasd some so they sent over a young Malaysian lad with the dough and as he walked in and saw the Asian punter him jaw nearly hit the ground and when he came behind the counter he told us it was the King of Malaysia. After that of course we treated him much more deferentially but I always got on well with him. Fast forward a year or two and I was still at college working for Ladbrokes and we went on a jolly to Brighton races with some of the people that worked for the firm in the West End. Before one of the rraces I went down to the paddock and lo and behold the King was there in the paddock and obviously owned one of the horses called something like Indurain or Indurus. He saw me and nodded and smiled but being fairly lubricated by this point in proceedings I decided to ask him about his animals chances (it was like a 3-1 shot) and he was very nice and informed me he had had a big bet on it which puzzled me because it was drifting in the ring. I was pretty inexperienced at this point and thought a tip from a mug owner was like gold dust so I literally had every penny I had on me on which was about £150 and probably 15x the biggest bet I had ever placed and told everyone else to back the horse which they did. We all took 3-1 and yet it still drifted and i was getting some fairly serious abuse by this point until the race started and the animal won by ten lengths. It wasn't until the SP's came through at 7/2 and then the Tote return came through of £1.10 that we realised that the poor old king had made the fatal mistake of having his big bet on the tote!!!
More stories like that please!
The King of Malayasia. Ooooh.
Guess he bet in half-crowns.

yeh me too, but gamblers are very stubborn and most enjoy being restricted as it makes them believe they are very shrewd cookies.
Was a brill post , deffo deserved more love.
racing and footy multiples always look good on your account, esp if you are not taking top price, standard each way union jacks on the Saturday TV racing soon after opening the account will make your account look muggy. the cherry on the cake is to play some v low risk casino game now and again prob blackjack or red/ black on the wheel. once you have casino business on the account you will prob get any benefit of doubt if you then start showing more signs of ability later on.
Cultivating an image as soon as the account is opened is the key, if the first ten bets you have include 4 warm horses some NFL that is out of line and some filthy each way trixies then it is going to get attention. If you open on a Saturday and have a small stakes ew union Jack, a treble on the footy and then just do that with a few first goalscorers and correct scores in the next week you will get thru the initial phase.
Most firms these days have highlighters for new accounts, bets appear in diff colours etc if they are from new accounts, max bets on that market etc so one other thing is try not to have the max the firm will allow you to have, just knock a few quid off and it won't glow if they look at your account.
Another ok idea is click thru to the sites using referral links from affiliates when you open the account, the firms are paying them to get accounts for them
It was certainly a teasing question.
Cliffs:
Rick suggested that to best preserve accounts & delay the dreaded "restrictions", it made sense to mix it up a bit, & don't always go where "best price" is.
I replied that the thread concensus is that we MUST get the very best price, & every time we take Evens when 21/20 was available elsewhere, many thought that was a Cardinal sin.
I thought Bobby's response was interesting, too - spending a few shillings on the Casino must automatically give a bit of protection, & at quite low cost if common sense is used.

Recommendations then for tonight
- Tranmere to beat Scunthorpe at 7/4 (see earlier post) William Hill
- Leeds at Bolton at 3/1 (value price, rather than firm conviction, just don't see Leeds as a 3-1 shot) Ladbrokes
- Hull v Blackpool over 2.5 goals at 4/5 (Nap) Paddy Power
Hull have seen over 2.5 goals land in their last six games, scoring and conceding in all of those.
Blackpool 12 scored/conceded in their last three. Never go away and play for a point. Ever.
Anxious not to get October into too big a hole tikay, so ignore or pick any as you wish or other people think
suggested sizes Tranmere £30ish, Leeds £20ish, Overs in Hull £50ish
Thanks Rich, all on.
We have Tranmere, £28 @ 7/4 with BetVictor.
Leeds, £20 @ 14/5, William Hill
Hull-Blackpool (Nap!) OVER 2.5 goals, £50 @ 4/5 with Paddy Power.
ON
Scunthorpe United v Tranmere Rovers
Tranmere Rovers
(Match Betting)
Odds: 7/4
Stake: 28.00
Possible Return: 77.00

I put up Huddersfield and Fleetwood for debate
Think someone else put up Watford at a shade over 2/1 at Charlton to follow up their win at Huddersfield.
Someone else put up Blackburn to score more than 1 goal at Forest. Think that one is tomorrow though.
On the Watford one I do think the hornets might be finally about to roll with their talented squad, but as I said we haven't won too often at Charlton although we haven't played them for several years.

Thanks Dung, I'll have a look a bit later.
Huddersfield definitely interest me.

On first glance Barnsley looked a standout price but then I thought a bit more about it and put myself off. This might be the first Championship card of the year I havent had a bet on although tempted by Cardiff.

Sporting Life tipped up Peterboro to win at Barnsley following their win at Hull. Not sure what their record is like though.

Chompy is a Peterborough supporter.
Chompy works for the Racing Post.
Chompy tipped Hull to score 4 v Peterborough last week. Posh won 3-1.
No further evidence M'Lord.

T20WC Report
The last 4 are Sri Lanka, West Indies, Australia and Pakistan
India failed to beat South Africa by 31 runs or more.
The thread Kohli bet is now a loser
Tight heat this final four
Odds are:
http://www.oddschecker.com/cricket/international/twenty20-world-cup/winner
In terms of our bets we have two realistic chances from the ante-posts
Malinga top Sri Lanka Wicket taker is 5/4 second favourite and one wicket behind Mendis 4/6
http://www.oddschecker.com/cricket/international/twenty20-world-cup/sri-lanka/top-bowler
Australia top sixes is basically a match 29-28 versus the West Indies, with pakistan 6 sixes away
We need one of these to scoop in a "get out of it" stakes!
The semis are on Thursday and Friday
Both Colombo
Sri Lanka
v
Pakistan
- Thurs 2.30
Australia
v
West Indies
- Fri 2.30
Your guess as good as mine
In Narine, Ajmal and Mendis we have three of the best spinners around, and Australia lack slow bowling of this quality but they have Watson the best all rounder in the comp and a lot of batting power
Chris Gayle's power a major risk to the sixes bet, and to Australia making the final which our bet needs
The class of Mahela Jayawardene too, when allied to Malinga, Mendis and the rest makes Sri Lanka tough in home conditions, but only very few players have picked Ajmal all tournament
Should be two fun games

left Scunthorpe United to go to Celtic. Good luck with the Tranmere bet. Looks a good bet 7/4.
