Just got an email from Betfair that I am entitled to a  50% refund if I don't end up in profit (up to £100) in tomorrow's races in Cheltenham.

Got to love free money!

Thursday, on the same pitch

Report up in the usual place tomorrow, will definitely be doing similar again for the T20 World Cup if these prices persist on Egland, South Africa and New Zealand, the teams most like fishes out of water against spin

Glad to say, I'm not bottom of the pile in the Cheltenham Tipster Comp. Safe mid-table for now. Bit tragic though, that it's my first day of holiday, and I've been sitting in the pub watching the races all day. Oh well...

The Tirreno-Adriatico starts tomorrow, and it's a curious one, insofar as it's bookended (one for the pedants) by two time-trials. The first one is a team TT over 16.9km. The second is individual ... over a flat 9.2km course. This leads one to infer that the general classification (GC) will be won by a rider with good TT skills. And certainly, the bookies have done so.

The favourite at the moment is Michal Kwiatkowski of Omega Pharma - Quick-Step (OPQS), a brilliant young Polish cyclist who has just won the Strade Bianche (backed by both me and Tonji aftertiming). The reason he is favourite, is that he is a very good time-triallist on an exceptionally good time-trialling team, and is in very good shape. In fact, there is hardly any doubt that OPQS will win the opening stage, due largely to the powerhouse that is Tony Martin. Kwiatkowski also has a chance to win the final stage, as he is no slouch against the clock.

However, caught up by the recent victory that Kwiatkowski has achieved, the bookies have failed to realise that there are also two significant climbs that will determine the outcome of the Tirreno-Adriatico this year. It is usually a lot easier to make up time on a difficult ascent, than to distance the field in a short time-trial. Which isn't to say that Michal is a bad climber. Actually, he is very good. But these two climbs do not suit his style, and there are others that are better equipped:

The first climb up to Cittareale, on stage 4, is a slow burner. 17km long, with an average gradient of 4.6%, it could be a game changer, depending on how fast the leaders decide to tackle it. My pick for this stage is Nairo Quintana (Movistar). Caveat ... I'm a fanboy. He will relish the opportunity to pick up the pace and distance his main rivals, as his engine just seems to be suited to churning out the watts over lower gradients. Only one or two will be able to match his speed, and Kwiatkowski will certainly lose time here. How much time is very important to the final destination of the yellow jersey.

Stage 5 introduces us to the Muro di Guardiagrele. Only 800m long, but with an average gradient of 26% (30% in parts), it is a monster. I expect Kwiatkowski to go backwards here. Quintana, being about the size of a nine year-old, won't have such problems. But even he won't win. This is a stage with Daniel Moreno's (Katusha) name all over it. He thrives on these steep ramps, and I can see him picking up a bunch of seconds on his opponents.

So, Kwiatkowski deserves to be favourite. But will he make up enough time in the TT's to make up for his losses on the steeps? No. Quintana isn't bad against the clock ... Moreno not so much. But I've never seen a Movistar team (or a Katusha team, or that matter) so geared towards not losing out in the team TT. Castroviejo, Dowsett, Intxausti, Malori, ... a virtual who's-who of top TT talent that just can't be ignored. Movistar have shown intent here, and they intend to win the Tirreno-Adriatico.

I suggest putting £20 on Quintana for the win @ 9/2 (Badjokes), and a £5 e/w saver on Moreno @ 125/1 (Beteverydayoftheyear).

Still absolutely fumming beyond belief at Posh's inability to break down a fragile Brizzle backline.

I am not putting another £ on this bunch of frauds this season. All in on someone else to nick sixth spot too, that's for sure. Also, the Britt dream is just about over I fancy. FUMMING!

That is a cracking write-up Wetty, that is Fred at it's best, thank you.

I got the £20 Win with Ladbrokes on Tarantino Quintana, @ 9/2

For the Moreno bet, Bet247 Restricted me to £0.13 EW (once bitten, twice shy, I did your big cycling win with them!), but I got £5 EW with Sporting Bet @ 100/1 on Moreno. Ladbrokes quoted 125/1 Moreno, but don't do EW.

Details in the morning, but we are all aboard.

2 BETS PLACED.
