Event 59: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 1b Ends With Alex Cordero Standing Tall as Chip Leader

Jake Cody - one of the bigger stacks going into Day 2.

After eight full levels and part of a ninth, Day 1b of Event 59: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em is in the books. The day began with 2,880 players and when all the dust settled, just 474 remained with Alex Cordero as your current chip leader (100,475). Other big stacks include Owen Crowe (67,000), Frank Labate (60,000) and Jeremy Paglieri with 58,300 in chips.

Now that both Day 1's are complete, we were able to obtain the final registrant and prizepool information. A grand total of 4,620 players entered, generating a prizepool of $4,158,000. First place will receive $654,797 - not too shabby.

Some notables who took to the felt today, but fell short and busted before the day's end include Angel Guillen, Kevin Saul, Faraz Jaka, Mickey Petersen, Dennis Phillips, J.C. Tran, Lauren Kling, Joe Cada and Andy Frankenberger - who fell victim to one poker's most brutal coolers.

Other more fortunate players who bagged some chips and will return tomorrow for Day 2 include Cherish Andrews (23,925), Humberto Brenes (15,025), Ben Yu (36,750), Chiab Saechao (29,000), Nam Le (34,000), Jeff Madsen (24,925) and Amanda Leatherman (11,075).

Another one to keep an eye out for is triple-crown winner Jake Cody, who bagged up an impressive 77,600 at the end of the day. Cody chipped up late in the day and scored a big pot after running aces into an opponent's all-in preflop.

Play is set to resume tomorrow at 1:00 PM PST, where the Day 1a and Day 1b fields will merge and play out ten levels.

some of the best players on the World Series of Poker Circuit who earned a seat into the $1 million WSOP National Championship freeroll.  These 100 players worked hard for their free shot at a big payday, but this event is also going to reward 100 of the WSOP's best performers of the past three years with a shot at the bracelet and a piece of the prize pool as well.

The 100 WSOP Rankings qualifiers for the WSOP National Championship may not have free seats into the event like their WSOPC counterparts, but for $10,000, they can take part in the action.  The elite field of 100 players is based on the WSOP World Rankings, which looks at player performance over the 2010 and 2011 WSOP.

The newly minted two-time Poker Players Champion, Michael Mizrachi, is the top points earner on the list of 100 afte rhis impressive two-year run, which included his first $50,000 Poker Players Championship victory, his Main Event final table appearance, and his 2011 WSOPE bracelet.  He isn't the only $50,000 PPC winner on the list either.  Brian Rast and David Bach also have an opportunity to buy-in and join the fray, as will recent WSOP Main Event winners Pius Heinz and Jonathan Duhamel.

The list of players eligible to buy-in is a veritable who's who of the poker world and they will certainly be formidable competition for the 100 WSOPC qualifiers in what is sure to be an exciting event.  The tournament is scheduled to get underway on Friday, July 6th at 12pm PT.  Day 2 of the National Championship runs on July 7th and the final table will return on July 11th to play down to a National Champion in front of the ESPN cameras.

Here are the 100 players who can buy-in to the WSOP National Championship on July 6th for $10,000.  The list is alphabetical by last name. A list of qualifiers in order of points earned is available on WSOP.com:

Event 57: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em - Six-Handed
Day 4 completed
Congratulations to Gregory Merson, Winner of Event 57: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em - Six-Handed ($1,136,197)

Three days and 30 one-hour levels were not enough for a champion to be crowned in Event 57, the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed. A fourth day and one more hand was all it took for Gregory Merson to capture his first World Series of Poker bracelet.

Earlier this summer, Merson bubbled the final table of Event 28, the $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em Four-Max. Determined to make the final table this time, he entered Day 3 in 12th place out of the remaining 27 players and won a few crucial pots as the final table approached to take a chip lead that he would never relinquish.

Holding {A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}, Merson called Nick Maimone's three-bet shove and bested his {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} when the board ran out {8-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{10-Hearts} to leave just eight players remaining. The next hand, Merson eliminated Layne Flack after the two engaged in a preflop raising battle, culminating with Flack five-bet shoving for about 35 big blinds with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Merson looked him up with {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and took down the pot when the board rolled out {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}.

That gave Merson a nice chip lead and he maintained it throughout the final table. He eliminated Andrew Lichtenberger in sixth place when his {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} got there again the {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs} of Lichtenberger. A {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} flop improved Lichtenberger's hand, but the {10-Hearts} turn gave Merson broadway. He dodged a heart on the river to score the elimination.

Merson eliminated Eddy Sabat in fourth place when the short-stacked Sabat called all in with {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}. Merson was behind with {K-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, but the board fell {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{K-Clubs} to give Merson the better two pair. He entered heads-up play with a sizable chip lead after Shannon Shorr ran {8-Spades}{5-Spades} into Merson's {A-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. The board improved neither player, giving Merson the pot with ace high.

A winner was not reached on Day 3, so they returned on Day 4 where Merson needed one hand to win the bracelet. An emotional Merson was overcome by the moment as his friends mobbed him in celebration.

Event 58: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better

Congratulations to Viacheslav Zhukov, Winner of Event 58: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better ($330,277)

The 2012 World Series of Poker continued on Thursday as the final 31 runners of a 526-player field returned to battle it out for the Event 58: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better title. Unfortunately, the fate of the gold bracelet and $330,277 first-place prize would not be determined until an impromptu Day 4, where Viacheslav Zhukov ultimately captured both.

Zhukov would start the heads-up battle with almost a 2-1 chip lead, but it wouldn't be an easy ride from there. The lead would exchange hands multiple times, but inevitably the last hand of the night would play out around three hours after heads-up began.

Cousineau fought gallantly to finish in second place, making this his second final table of the summer after being on the final table of Event 47: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split 8-or-Better.

Zhukov can now call himself an Omaha Hi-Low specialist, with today being his second bracelet in this form of poker after winning the $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better Championship in 2011.

Final Table Results
Place   Player   Prize
1st   Viacheslav Zhukov   $330,277
2nd   Roch Cousineau   $204,426
3rd   Chris Bell   $135,858
4th   David "ODB" Baker   $100,820
5th   Randy Ohel   $75,662
6th   Yuval Bronshtein   $57,339
7th   Jack Ward   $43,840
8th   Scotty Nguyen   $33,789
9th   Juan Ramirez   $26,235

WSOP National Championship
Day 1 completed
Brian Rast Leads 39 Players to Day 2 in National Championship
Posted 42 minutes ago by Paul_Oresteen • Level 15: 1,200-2,400, 400 ante

After a full year in the making Day 1 of the WSOP National Championship has come to a close. Almost all of the 100 WSOPC qualifiers showed up to play and 57 WSOP POY qualifiers forked over the $10,000 entrance fee to play. Leading the remaining 39 players is Brian Rast with 248,000.

On Rast’s heels are Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (231,500) and Matt Keikoan (228,500). Notables David “ODB” Baker, Eugene Katchalov, Sam Stein, Fabrice Soulier, Chris Tryba and Chris Moorman still remain.

WSOPC standouts Drazen Ilich, Aaron Massey, Amanda Musumeci, Ryan Eriquezzo, Chris Conrad, Jamie Kerstetter, Huy Nguyen and Jacob Naquin remain in the field. Only two WSOPC Main Event champions remain – Eriquezzo and Jerry Monroe.

A total of 19 tables began play and eliminations were swift throughout the day. By the dinner break that number had been halved and by night’s end only five tables remained.

Plenty of notables that paid $10,000 did not survive the day including; Michael Mizrachi, Tristan Wade, David “Doc” Sands, Jeffrey Papola, Pius Heinz, Christian Harder, John Racener, Matt Glantz, Allen Bari and Phil Hellmuth.

Some of the WSOPC qualifiers that didn’t survive the day included; Freddy Deeb, Alex Masek, Kurt Jewell, Tripp Kirk, Kyle Cartwright, AP Phahurat, Tuan Phan, Drew Dumanski, Daniel Lowery, Raj Kattamuri, Charles Moore and Jennifer Parrish.

The structure has been kept the same as WSOPC Main Events with 40-minute levels on Day 1 and levels bump up to 60 minutes during Day 2. The third and final day of play will have 75-minute levels.

Day 2 of Event 59: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em is history with Alex Cordero as your current chip leader. Not too far behind are Franklin Johnson (789,000), Dimitri Hodeew (593,000) and Bao Dao with 477,000 in chips.

Today we saw a merging of the surviving players from Day 1a and Day 1b, which brought a total of 726 players together to duke it out. When all was said and done, just xx would remain to see a Day 3.

Eliminations came swiftly and before we knew it, the money bubble had burst by the middle of the eleventh level. Some notables who were knocked out early, but still managed to cash include Jeff Madsen (456th), Jeffrey Manza (450th), Tony Dunst (424th) and Konstantin Puchkov (381st), who made history by cashing a record-breaking eleventh time in a single series.

Phil Ivey was another player to fall short on Day 2. After working his stack up to nearly 80,000 during level 13, Ivey's stack went on a bit of a roller-coaster ride - both swinging upward and downward as opponents doubled through him and he doubled through opponents. Ivey eventually met his end after pushing all in with {7-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and losing out to Yoav Tenenbaum's {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}. Ivey's 208th-place finish marked his seventh cash of the series.

Alex Cordero (the overall chip leader of both Day 1's) used his abundance of chips to play many pots and put pressure on his opponents throughout the day. A key hand for Cordero occurred when he rivered the nut straight and got paid off by his lone opponent. Cordero's stack slipped a little toward the end of the night, but managed to come back strong by eliminating a couple of opponents in the last level.

Jake Cody will also be joining the field in Day 3. Cody's stack was anything but consistent throughout the day - both rising and falling as he found himself in big pots late in the day. By the end, Cody bagged up xxx and will be looking to make a run for a second gold bracelet.

Event 59: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em
Day 3 completed
Congratulations to Dominik Nitsche, Winner of Event 59: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em ($654,797)

What a whirlwind of a tournament! The schedule had called for this one to conclude tomorrow, but the pace was fast enough that all was decided tonight, thanks in large part to the young German Dominik Nitsche storming through the final table to win his first WSOP bracelet in Event 59: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em.

Today's Day 3 began with 51 survivors from the starting field of 4,620 still battling for the bracelet. Play moved quickly through the first four levels, with that field being trimmed to 29 after two hours, then down to 16 after four.

Among those hitting the rail by then were Event 1: $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold'em winner Chiab "Chip" Saechao (39th), Jake Cody (35th), Thomas "GnightMoon" Fuller (30th), and Aditya Agarwal (19th). It would take another couple of hours to play down to a nine, with David Steirman (16th), James Taylor (15th), Yoav Tenenbaum (14th), Daniel Thomas (13th), Hieu Nguyen (12th), Joshua Prager (11th), and Iakov Onuchin (10th) all making deep runs but falling just shy of the final table.

By then Nitsche had already assumed a commanding chip lead, and once the final table began he immediately taking the initiative, opening most pots and quickly creating distance between himself and the rest of the pack. Eventually the short stacks would start pushing in, and Nitsche was there to pick them off.

First it was Daniel Eichhorn falling with {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts} to Nitsche's {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} to go out in ninth. Soon after it was Jonathan Miller taking his chances with {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} against Nitsche's pocket kings, and when Miller's hand failed to improve they were down to seven.

Pocket kings would also be the cause of Martin Vallo's demise in seventh place, with Jonathan Hilton using them to best Vallo's pair of sixes. Then Then Frankie Johnson would be the next to try his luck against Nitsche with {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} only to see the chip leader turn over a familiar hand — {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}. Five community cards later Nitsche's hand was still best, and with five remaining Nitsche had amassed more than half of the chips in play.

The Nitsche steamroller would keep going, gathering two more eliminations before the end of Level 27. First a short-stacked Randy Lanosga reraised shoved with pocket sixes over a Nitsche open, but the latter had {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} and soon Lanosga was on the rail. Then Sebastien Comel called a Nitsche five-bet shove with {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and was racing against Nitsche's pocket nines, but the board rolled out eight-high and Comel was out in fourth.

Finally they reached the end of the level and the break. Nine players had been sitting around the table an hour before, but now they were down to three. And Nitsche had almost all of the chips, with more than 10.5 million while Alex Cordero and Jonathan Hilton were each sitting with less than 2 million.

It was shortly after play resumed that the two short stacks went to battle, with Alex Cordero committing the last of his stack on a {10-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} board holding {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} (queens, a flush draw, and a gutshot) against Hilton's {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs} (aces). The river was the {2-Diamonds}, Cordero's run had ended in third.

Heads-up play began with Nitsche well in front with nearly 10.5 million to Hilton's 3.4 million. Hilton battled for well over an hour, although never was able to add much to his stack, and soon found himself down below 1 million.

Hilton would survive through double-ups, but was down again when he at last called Nitsche's all-in shove and hoped his {A-Clubs}{8-Hearts} would hold against Nitsche's {K-Spades}{5-Spades}. But the board came {3-Hearts}{J-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}, that river nine giving Nitsche a better straight, and in one day they'd played down from 51 players to just one.

Nitsche becomes the second German player this summer to claim a bracelet, joining his countryman Jan-Peter Jachtmann, winner of Event 39: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha. In just three years, Nitsche has had a lot of tourney success all over the world, with a Latin American Poker Tour title, numerous cashes all over Europe and in the European Poker Tour, a World Poker Tour final table (in Marrakech, Morocco), and now a World Series of Poker bracelet!
