nearly three weeks ago I wrote that the verbalization rule was a bad idea. Unfortunately, it took the players until the fifth event of the series to say or do anything about it, and a lot of them acted like they had never heard of the rule change until that time. Even Daniel Negreanu:

The verbalization rule has since been reduced to a “suggestion,” but we could’ve avoided this whole mess if the players acted before the series started. The well-publicized WSOP conference call took place on May 8, giving the players plenty of time to file formal complaints with Jack Effel and the rest of the WSOP staff. And they should have because the rule made no sense. If enforced, verbalization changes the way some poker players act entirely, and it doesn’t add that much to the broadcast because all of a sudden there’s a third or fourth announcer in the booth.

If you’ve ever watched a broadcasted sporting event, then you know that there’s usually one play-by-play announcer and one color commentator. Poker is no different, so on the WSOP live stream, David Tuchman will guide the viewers through the action and ask his broadcast partner to break down the action. There’s already a tournament director on hand to announce the action for spectators, so if you force the players to verbalize their actions, you’re going to get information repeated twice, once by the TD, and once by Tuchman. That’s not great television. Thankfully, this rule has been tossed out, and, hopefully, the drama that came with it will begin to die down.

The All American Dave issue is different because it has nothing to do with the Effel or any other decision- maker for the WSOP — it’s the vendors at the Rio who are unhappy, and rightfully so. They’re trying to maximize profits while someone who may not have a license, and probably doesn’t have to pass a health inspection, is running around the halls delivering meals to their potential customers. The customers aren’t at fault — they’re just looking for a more healthy option at a more reasonable price.

Event 9: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Re-Entry

Congratulations to Ashkan Razavi, Winner of Event 9: $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Re-Entry ($781,398)!


Five days ago a uniquely structured event began that allowed tournament runners who busted on the first day a second chance. When all was said and done, the event turned up an astounding 3,404 entrants. After five days of play, Ashkan Razavi was the lone man standing, earning him $781,398 in prize money and a shiny gold World Series of Poker bracelet.

Event 11: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha

Congratulations to Vincent van der Fluit, Winner of Event 11 ($265,221)

After three days of skilled Pot-Limit Omaha play, Event 11 of the World Series of Poker has came to an end. Some 970 players entered the tournament and only nine returned for the final day. Dutchman Vincent Van Der Fluit has claimed his first gold bracelet and $265,211.

The final table was an international affair and returned players from five different countries. Tristan Wade was the only returning WSOP bracelet winner but he had stiff competition with high stakes player Van Der Fluit. Charles Tonne returned as the chip leader for the second day in the tournament.

Event 12: $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em

The Final Four is Set

A field of 152 players started in Event 12, the $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em. Making Wednesday's Day 2 was what it took to make the money and 32 players did just that. From there, three rounds of matches were played and when all was said and done, only four players survived to have a shot at capturing the World Series of Poker gold bracelet tomorrow.

Among the players that were eliminated in the round of 32 were Scott Baumstein (29th), Tommy Vedes (28th), Kevin Saul (26th), Eric Froehlich (25th), Andrew Lichtenberger (23rd), Mark Radoja (21st), Richard Lyndaker (19th), and Darren Elias (18th). They each earned $10,966.

Those who fell in the sweet 16 and collected $20,674 include Antonio Esfandiari (16th), Jonathan Jaffe (13th), Paul Volpe (12th), and Vanessa Selbst (9th).

Following them out the door with losses in the elite eight worth $56,380 were Michael Drummond (8th), Andrew Robl (7th), Jeffrey Gross (6th), and Chris Moore (5th).

Event #14: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout

The $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout Sees 120 Players Progress to Day 2

The $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout event is always a popular tournament at the World Series of Poker. The players look at the structure and see that you only have to win three tables to win a bracelet. That is easier said than done, but there is the possibility of spending less hours at the table in winning a bracelet in this event than it takes to get through some day ones of other events.

A total of 1,138 turned up to play today and they were spread across 120 tables spilling into a second room. There is no outright chip leader heading into tomorrow as this was a shootout format. All 120 remaining players will bring back roughly the same stack tomorrow where they will shootout one more time. For a complete of who’s through click on the chip count tab or click here.

Some of the notable players who won their tables to advance included: Phil Ivey, Joe Cada, Blair Hinkle, David “Doc” Sands, Scott Clements, Erik Seidel, Terrence Chan, Gavin Smith, Jeff Madsen, Melanie Weisner and John Eames.

Eames had a table of “grinders” and was one of the last ten tables to finish. He had to overcome the sturdy force of Tony Cousineau in a long heads up battle. The final hand came when Eames pushed with {q-Clubs}{10-Spades} and was called by Cousineau and his {a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}. The board ran out to give Eames a straight and Cousineau was gracious in defeat.

Others who failed to make it through the day included: Liv Boeree, Viktor Blom, Joeseph Cheong, Jonathan Duhamel, Chris Moorman, Jake Cody, Steve O’Dwyer, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Jose “Nacho” Barbero, Daniel Negreanu, and a whole load more we could mention in this class.

The restart for tomorrow is scheduled for 1pm in the Amazon room. The remaining 120 players will be spread over 12 tables of ten players each. Each table will play to a winner and the remaining 12 players will return on Friday. There they will play on two tables of six until the remaining ten play on one table down to a winner.

Event 12: $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em

Congratulations to Brian Hastings, Winner of Event 12: $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em ($371,498)!

We began Event 12, the $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em, with 152 players. After 151 matches, only one emerged with an undefeated record. 24-year-old Brian Hastings outlasted the field, capturing his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet and a $371,498 pay day. Birthday Boy Madsen Joins 11 Other for Day 3 of the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout

The remaining 120 players came back today to try and repeat what they did yesterday; win a sit 'n' go to advance to the next day. They were spread over 12 tables and it took until 12:10 PM for all tables to complete. They will advance to the final day tomorrow where they will play down to a winner.

The final 12 will line up on two tables of six until two players are eliminated. From there they will redraw and face-off against each other, and shootout until one player is left standing. Here's how they will line up tomorrow:

Jeff Madsen turned 27-years old today and it looked as if his birthday present was lost in the post as he lined up at the "Table of Death" along with, and out of position to Lauren Kling, Tom Schneider, David "Doc" Sands, Randal Flowers, Joe Cada, and Ben Jenkins. He ran well and said he played some of the best poker he's ever played to give himself the ideal birthday present.

Madsen's key moment came when he knocked out the very dangerous Sands. Sands had just taken a bad beat to get somewhat short and shoved with {q-}{j-}. Madsen looked down and saw pocket pocket aces, called, and took care of Sands.
