Talking to a friend in a home game last night I decided that, from the finish of the WSOP for the next 12 months I want to make it a priority to qualify for a TV game or big buy in event. (don't we all)

I was wondering if anyone who's already done this has any advice or experiences to share, or if anyone trying and failing so far has any learns they would like to pass on.

I also spend most of my online poker time trying to qualify for things, the experience of these things must outweigh the monetary side of things (ie. only playing in monied tournies).  I would recommend trying for Laddies Poker Cruise, I was lucky enough to win a seat last year and it was a superb week, and this (next) years looks even better.  In fact it was after going that I decided to make qualifying for things my main aim, the WSOP being the main one for this year (With no success).  So I'm all out for the cruise now.

I'm not in a position to offer advice, I think Ariston and Mel are the satellite King/Queen.

Hi there,   yeah i've won quite a few satellites to tv/big EPT events .  I think me and Ariston are
about same in numbers now Wink

Have to say that to win a satellite is a big achievement in itself.  Have lots of patience and play strong hands well and wait for opportunities  but you probably know that already

The satellites i've won seats into are British Poker Open, EPT Deauville, EPT Monte Carlo, Cavendish Club Belfast and now Maxim Grand Final Poker Championship playing on weds night.  They have been great tournaments to play and met loads of nice people through them.  I placed in EPT Deauville came 18th, wish i'd got better but it paid top 27 so 3500euros better off , BPO I got took out by Gus "Muppetboy" Hanson on a 60/40 shot  Shocked
which you've probably seen on poker channel but hell had a great time , Cavendish was down to last 4 tables and went out with 99 v AK and Monte Carlo had monsters that ran into bigger monsters and couldn't recover

The experience from playing these events is amazing.  I can say I sat next to Devilfish and Isabelle Mercier and now chat quite regular to Isabelle and took out Jan Bouble and other top name players.

The thrill of playing bigger events is so much more intense.  EPT events were 4 days solid play which I can honestly say was knackering and to pee me off even more Redbull is illegal in france, how bad is that!!

If you're wanting to go for the WSOP this year/next year good luck.  I'm trying too, although its hard work

good plans adam, i won a seat to the aussie millions a couple of years back & boy did that open my eyes - invaluable experience.

the laddies poker cruise looks like a great package too & i also think there might be a very high profile TV event in october, lots of added money with just a handful of online spots to be won.

My nearest claim to fame this year is getting a ticket to the Ladbrokes Poker Million Final, er to the party that is so I can watch the game over dinner and a hotel chucked in. Would rather have a sarnie and a seat though.

I have been lucky enough to win a few of these satelitte things in the last 6 months. You can read diaries on all of the events at betfairpokertournaments.com then click the deal tag at the top and scroll down to my ugly mug(spam but appropriate if you want to read about st maarten, deauville, monte carlo, bpo and new orleans). The next one I really would recommend everyone tries for is the caribbean poker classic in St Kitts later in Nov/december (it was in St Maarten last year).
As a player who played mainly small events (1000 or less) live these events have been eye openers to say the least and playing with some of the best players in the world has certainly improved my game. As I am not a player to sit quitely at the table (insert sarcastic quote here guys) I have also managed to make many new friends who I had seen on the TV and never imagined playing against let alone sharing drinks with. If you want to win seats to events just do it, its not hard if you set your mind to it. If I can win multiple seats then anyone can Grin Beward though after playing in a few of these there is no going back to the 10 rebuy comp twice a week- you want more. I have given up work to play full time and this would not have been possible without the support of friends and family.

perhaps as part of the site re-design a section for online satelites would be a good Idea. I play regularly on relatively few sites but have accounts all over and am sure there's plenty of good value satelites I miss.

Adam, now that IS a good idea.

Julian, am intrigued by your post about a high profile TV event. I heard the rumours too, think it may have been on the radio. (Remember Radio guys?). You ever been on the Radio? (Let the boy have his moment of glory - he had a 1.5 second spot on Radio Ruddington earlier this week. Both listeners missed it though).
