If you bothered to give some thought to the incident, it would be obvious that Higgins had no intention to fix matches.
I was "bothered" to pretty close attention to the story, most importantly the bit where he is sat on camera telling the guy which offshore account to ship the 300k to whilst re-assuring him how easy it is to throw a frame in a snooker match. The excuse of "I was scared they were mafia so I played along" doesn't really cut the mustard with me.
My recollection was that the NOTW interview was subtitled and dubbed and that Higgins wasn't saying half the stuff that the tape showed. It looked like they tried to set up a sting, didn't have enough to go on so doctored it to suit their agenda.

Didn't really follow this at the time. What was he doing there in the first place?

He went with his agent, who was also the number 2 in the WPBSA as I recall, to talk about setting up a new tournament in eastern Europe, when they got to the meeting thats when the talk started of throwing frames. It was fairly obvious his agent was in on it from the start ie that's who NOTW targeted to get Higgins there.

The spectrum of punishments handed out for cheating in sport is quite wide isn't it? Pakistan bowlers get prison for spot-fixing, Dwain Chambers gets life ban for drug-taking, Higgins gets six-month ban for frame-rigging, and Luis Suarez gets boos from the crowd for swan-diving.

I thought for something to be libel it actually had to be untrue.

he wasn't banned for frame rigging (the defence you are probably after is something along the lines of his reputation was damaged anyway)

mate, seriously, he was bang to rights many times before the NOTW scoop, a six month ban was lenient, contrived by Hearn's so called investigation team. He got off lightly, but not as lightly as the other main protagonist.
You don't really think the NOTW just happened to pick Higgins and his manager out of the air to expose the cheats do you?

that wld be the notw that hacks the phone of a dead girl to get a story? Whether you like it or not Higgins wasn't banned for match fixing and any publication that stated he was would be asked to retract any such statement

this doesn't change the fact that he prolly did rig the frames though.

Higgins was found guilty of 'giving the impression' he was going to cheat. People might say that's not very serious. Those people should give their wife the impression they're going to cheat and see what happens.
