Stolen Mobile Phones

Evening
From time to time I help people with complaints (favourite is airlines!) and have been asked to do a complaint regarding a mobile phone. Situation is this person has a mobile that he rarely uses as he has a company phone (he works for me) which was stolen and he reported this approx 2 days later as he was not at home, only to be told that someone had rung up a bill phoning Africa of about £700 and they are now threatning him for the money and giving him a bad credit report etc - he did get a crime reference number but obviously that is as far as it goes with the police
Best way to approach?

There were some sims going about with unlimited credit for £150 about 4 years ago. I never bought one because the guy selling em said they could be switched off any day or in a years time. I never got one but my mate did and it's still going strong today Sad
