It's quite interesting as the commentators are obv leagues below the level of the players so they are struggling to even commentate as they haven't really got a clue what to do themselves.. Could do with Kasparov on the mic.

Actually tbf to the commentators it must be tough to fill 30 mins or whatever before a move even takes place.

IM Lawrence Trent gets a lot of work commentating and I was pleased to see him when i tuned in. He's got an excellent working partnership with GM Stephen Gordon and you'll be able to see them amongst others give top notch coverage of the London Chess Classic for free next month.

Lawrence has been known to play live poker in London and as of December last year was making a push for a GM norm.

He and Ste are both cracking lads.

Round one was a bore draw. Hardly a shock that neither party fancied giving much away first up and a repetition came when the players were barely out of the opening.

As you were.

Here's something a little different instead. The preparation of the venue is absolutely critical to these chess players. Nothing just be out of place. The shape and design of the pieces must be agreed, as must the height of the table and every other imaginable dimension or variable.

Here is Anand (with entourage), testing out the board the other day:

Actually tbf to the commentators it must be tough to fill 30 mins or whatever before a move even takes place.

Computers help these days, but you still can't get inside the players' heads very easily. The commentators will be International Masters or Grand Masters and will offer lots of insight to the goings on.

It's almost an impossible task to do live commentary on chess in the same way as you'd get, say, commentary on football.

yeah I was probs a bit too critical tbh. Thought the Indian GM who came on was very very good! Had a great read of what they were planning to do and called the draw pretty early. Didn't really like the guy and Tania (iirc?) but obv this is just the opinion of a muggle who has never watched a live chess match before.

Still enjoyable and looking forward to the days ahead.

Some wonderful pictures in this.

If you're worried that you shouldn't be annoyed at the anticlimactic opening game, don't be. You're in good company:

It would be interesting to know who Carlsen's seconds are. For the candidates he used a trainer who had a history working with Anand and there was an agreement in place they wouldn't work together in this championship match.

As for the commentator's they've made a very politically correct selection and have covered their bases with the analysis based GM's and the more talkative younger couple. We can expect them to improve the more they work together.

edit: it was Danish GM Peter Heine Nielsen who was taken on board to help him with his openings.
