google's "Deepmind" solves Chess, apparently.

Very clever, well done them, but I think it's rather sad actually.

Same as HUDs and other poker software IMO.

Some of the tactics were scary. It found a stonker of a move for white in this position. The chessbase authors laptop and Stockfish set up couldn't find the move after an hour of analysing 9 million positions per second.

Bishop to g5 and blacks position crumbles whether or not he captures it. Spectacular stuff.

Spectacular stuff, McGlashan. Really is.

Kasparov was interviewed by the guy behind that supercomputer, Englishman Demis Hassabis, promoting Garry's new book, Deep Thinking.

Fascinating stuff.

You can buy the painting if you want. World Chess announced that today.

I've messaged Bobby1 so he's aware.

There seems to be a new kid on the block, Fabiano Caruana, what can Tal Bloke or our other chess heads tell us about him? Seems quite the whizz kid.

Have to say, he looks like what I would imagine Karabiner's great grandson would look like.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Caruana has been around for a while, generally finishing in the middle of the pack in elite tournaments. A grandmaster at 14. He used to represent Italy, but moved to the USA, following the efforts of the multimillionaire, Rex Sinquefield, to improve the US chess team. Caruana and Wesley So (of the Phillipines) came over to the US a few years ago, both having ties to the States, I hasten to add. Caruana was born in Miami.

Caruana was managed by the british international master, Lawrence Trent, for a while.

His best result was the 2014 Sinquefield Cup in St Louis, where he wiped the floor with the field in a tournament featuring Carlsen, Nakamura, Aronian, Vachier-Legrave amongst others. In rating performance terms, it might be the best result in any tournament in history.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinquefield_Cup#Sinquefield_Cup_2014

He then reverted to the pack a little, becoming a little less explosive and a bit more solid. He's a heavy student of the game and a result like the Candidates was always possible.

I can't help but feel it was anyone's guess who won that Candidates tournament, and decided on a couple of games that could have gone another way. That's not to say he was lucky; you don't win the Candidates by luck. But playing Carlsen in a long format match is a different proposition.

Thanks for the write up Tal. There'll be a few observers non too familiar with his playing style, myself included. I did wonder if Caruana might play with more selective aggression rather than settle for a tied series, seeing as in a speed format play off there'd be far greater disparity in their ratings.

This is an almost Soviet story. Could easily be from Russia in the fifties.
