Fascinating end-game here in game #6.

Surely Carlsen forces the W..

Vlad Kramnik: What is the conclusion?
Peter Svidler: Chess is very difficult, and also not a draw.

At move 130, Nepomniachtchi played Qe6. This was the moment the dam burst.

Brutal that they have to go straight from over six hours of play to do the press conference. And then play tomorrow.

Draw backers for game 7 in clover.

Brutal game.

So enjoyable to watch.

I have to take a break every 40 mins from poker as my game v low stakes recs suffers from mental fatigue.

These two playing for 7+ hours having to reference 6 months prep just for the openings, and theoretical drawn positions that are only draws when you find the exact move order every time, for 130 odd moves.

Tal, thought you may enjoy this if you haven't seen it

He's not the player he was, but it's just wonderful to see a Shirov special.

It's been a while, but I thought this was a fascinating article on the rise of Soviet chess after the revolution:

I enjoyed that, thanks Simon. Some lovely photos too, especially the one (below) of nirvana.

How much has chess strategy changed in the last 100 years? How would a top chess player in, say, 1922 fare against today's best players? Get a good beating presumably?

The best from 100 years ago would get marmalised these days. It's a slower development than in poker, but it's like comparing poker from the sixties to today.

Alekhine was arguably the founder of the modern style of chess. He moved the game on to a new level. As the article discusses, the Russian revolution was a significant factor, but, for Alekhine, it was cause for him to leave. He ended up taking French nationality and having a fierce rivalry with the Cuban José Capablanca (which translates less exotically to Joe Whitehead)

Solid reporting in the Daily Mail.  Chinese man takes the world title from Magnus Carlsen.

Chinese man wins the World Chess Championship for the first time in the tournament's history after decades of US and Russian dominance

I don't know if any of you chess guys listen to "The Infinite Monkey Cage" podcast, but here's a link to an episode where rather than the usual presenters we have a talk by Matthew Syed, who usually does his talking on his own podcast  "Sideways".

All very confusing.

Anyway the piece has quite a bit of chess content and some discussion about how the game, or rather the players, are developing over time.
