Ssaw Hellmuth has had a 10k bet on denver winning over 8.5 games.

The first of my many amateur NFL questions is why, in a couple of sentences please?

Very good defense last year. young and talented

Peyton Manning, decent running game. Couple of decent receivers

One of the weaker divisions (Oakland, San Diego, Kansas) and 6 of the 16 games are in division

8-8 last year, though Tebow dragged the team over the line a few times

Seams a reasonable expectation to go 9-7/10-6 a year on...can't have them 12-4 though so if he wins it it won't be by much

How is it determined who plays who and from which divisions?

16 games

Each team plays the others in their division twice, thats 6

They play another division in their conference once, in rotation every 3 years, thats 4

They play another division in the other conference once, in rotation every four years, thats 4

The final two are against teams in their conference with the most similar records from last year, thats 2

the final category gives you games like 49ers v Packers this weekend, and all the marquee match ups that for example kept pitting manning v brady year after year when both teams were strong

this year the NFC East has a pig of a year, on paper for example

they get AFC North (Ravens, Steelers, Bengals all strong)

they get NFC South (Saints, Panthers on the way up)

One of the great things about the nfl though is the salary cap, free agency and draft means a team can go from bottom to top v v quickly so no huge discrepancies in payroll like you do in baseball or the English football spanish football problem of knowing within reason who'll be top 4 every year

For the most capitalist sport there is, the process is actually very socialist.

Looking at the fixtures, anyone fancy the Jags going 0-16?

Not at all

Much underrated defense will keep them in games

4-12, 5-11 type team for me

Gabbert has looked much more competent so far in training camp and pre-season, and Justin Blackmon is a beast at WR, so offensively they're better equipped too.

As Tighty says, the defense is better than in gets credit for so they'll win a few games.

Cleveland, Arizona and possibly Miami will end up with worse records than the Jags this year, IMO, although no-one will be 0-16.  I'd expect 3-13 to be as bad as it gets this season,

The Giants have it worst of all out of the NFC East - their two 'additional' games which are non-common with the other teams in their division are the Packers and 49ers.

Potentially, it impacts the likelihood of teams getting Wild Cards from the tougher division as a 9-7 record (which is probably what's required) is far tougher to achieve from the NFC East than, say, the NFC West this season.

cheers, I wondered if the reason it was red button/online only is that ESPN would still be broadcasting it here on 417

I take that means we have to put up with Jake Humphries presenting it?

Darren Fletcher and Mike Carlson would be superb, think Mike's freelance

It really does depend on who is doing the coverage for bbc, if this is a win or not. Obv Mike Carlson doing it would count as a win.

I don't know a lot about NFL but as a viewing spectacle and a betting sport I love it.

Its probably the sport that I "mug" punt most on without actually knowing whats going on.

Hints, tips and just a genuine idiots guide to rules and stuff would be much appreciated.

I have already punted on tonight's game unsure if its a bet but I have Giants to beat the spread and under 45.5 point double @ 11/4.

One decent commentators idea of the five worst teams this year

Top five 2013 NFL Draft order:

1. Arizona Cardinals - Easy explanation: John Skelton, starting quarterback. Easier explanation: D'Anthony Batiste and Bobby Massie, starting offensive tackles. Despite having the NFL's best wide receiver, the Cardinals seem to be several years away from being a good team.

2. Cleveland Browns - The Browns have 15 rookies on the roster, including their starting quarterback and running back (who missed the entire preseason). They also have what looks like one of the league's toughest schedules. Add an impending suspension for cornerback Joe Haden and you've got the makings of yet another long season for Cleveland.

3. Miami Dolphins - It seems as the discontent grows in Miami, the talent on the roster diminishes. Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill is promising, but he has one of the worst receiving corps in the NFL. Sorry, we're not buying into the Legedu Naanee hype.

4. Oakland Raiders - The Raiders are deep in the midst of a roster turnover. While doing so, they're relying on Carson Palmer playing like it's 2006 and Darren McFadden's health holding out. It's hard to imagine both, or even one, of those things happening.

5. St. Louis Rams - This century (!), a conference has only had four of the first five picks once. That was 2010 with St. Louis, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Washington. So it's unlikely the AFC will have four of the first five picks in 2013. Because of that farfetched theory, lets go with St. Louis for the fifth pick. We'll learn a lot about St. Louis in Jeff Fisher's first mustachioed season, namely how good quarterback Sam Bradford is. If Bradford struggles, they'll be picking this high. If he doesn't, I'll look foolish. Regardless, neither would be a first.
