Looking at buying a greyhound or 2 with a few mates although all of us know little about the sport really - Been doing some research online, and know alot more than I did and am now trying to find a trainer near our local track (Oxford).
Can anyone reccomend a reputable trainer in the area? Any other advice, do's and dont's etc would be welcome

Good pastime for a group of 2-4 imo. Gives you a (hopefully) weekly excuse to catch up and have a couple of beers. Buying a pup is a bit like backing a 16/1 poke win only, buying something that has perhaps already raced/graded in at the track is more like backing a 2/1 shot ew. The latter shouldn't let you down too much but has not pot of (metaphorical) gold at the end of the (also metaphorical) rainbow. The former offers a few months of speculating and,l dreaming, before at worst, it being useless, to par offering the same outcome as previous described (grader) of at best (16/1) its quite good. |

cheers all, yeah we not doing it as an investment, just for kicks and banter and excuse for a few nights out I like the idea of getting a pup... (cos I'm a dreamer obv) but interesting to hear what you had to say ed... still like the idea of getting a pup though  Worst case my boy going to be overjoyed at having real life dog for a pet !! I really want to know about specific trainers at oxford, bit of a minefield when you not close to the game.. I'll try bigfella, cheers for pointer geo Tom |

If you are running it T Mar then I suggest you get the syndicate to pay you monthly via bank transfer and call the partnership something like 'Doggie Style UK' as when you eventually disband the partnership some of the guys will not want to go into their bank and cancel the direct debit they have to 'Doggie Style UK' I paid for about 4 months after our dog was sold coz I didn't want to go into the bank and cancel the 20 quid monthly direct debit on my account to 'Doggie style' |

Don't buy rubbish or be talked into buying a dog over say two and a half years old. You will all get fun by watching a dog who can win races - sounds obvious but paying that bit extra can be worthwhile. My recommendation would be to not buy a young pup who hasn't started schooling yet - yes you can get lucky but the flip side is you may end up with a dog that never makes it to the track. Get a dog under 2 years old with just a few races on its card and that will improve through the grades and give you a lot of fun. Local trainers will try to sell you something already in their kennel - can be ok if young with potential but buying a young un from Ireland is a good way to go too. A lot depends on your budget but if you wanted name of a good honest contact in Ireland I can provide that.

Cheers for that, and may well take you up on it.. been speaking to rooks about it also since i posted, and he been really helpful and given me name of trainer in swindon that he reccommends so going to hook up a meeting in next few weeks all being well Ta |
