"then the Malaysian money presumably re-tools the team to stay up."

If they have all this money slashing about, why are they £96 million in debt?  I never read about Chelsea being £X million in debt, presumably because Abramovich just writes it off?

Chelsea are gazillions in debt, but its to one man who keeps funding it. Same as Man C and all the clubs bought by new owners

I defer to Sheriff who would give more accurate descriptions, but none of these are solvent if the sugar-daddies walk away.

I thought Chelsea's P&L was horrific but their balance sheet was okay as Abramovich just gifts the cash so it shows up in shareholder capital/injections rather than being classed as external debt?  That is why I am confused about Cardiff's debt figures, because you wouldn't normally class owner investment in "debtors".

Indeed.  According to the financial journal The Sun, Chelsea are debt free as Roman converted debt into equity.

I did say not long ago Mandaric wasn't doing as I expected from him.

I didn't expect any big money signings, but definitely a little more than we did get at the start of the season. He doesn't want to hang around and quite clearly in it for the £££, but thought there would be more. I dare to say it, but there is so much more potential in Wednesday than any of his previous clubs, so wondering why he didn't have a much better go. I think it's a bigger job than he expected! It's actually frightening to think what crowds we would get if we was towards the top, so hopefully a bit more spent next season and less quantity would set us up there. At this point, I am very optimistic we will stay up.

Huddersfield & Charlton? I thought Huddersfield might have a fair crack at it with the money from Rhodes, but nothing & appointed a terrible manager in Robins as for Charlton, just don't think the backing is there at all.

Also curious to know why Ipswich do so badly season after season? They do seem to have some decent players down there...

Who are bigger?  Sheff Weds or Sheff Utd?  They both seem to get good crowds.

Not sure about Ipswich - they have had financial problems the last few years which has restricted investment and some poor managers (Keane/Jewell) which doesn't help.

Both big teams, obv

Bramall Lane one of my favourite grounds, cracking atmosphere

Mandaric bought Wednesday for £1, iirc, and wants to turn it. Not interested in getting them to the premiership with the investment that will cost merely stabilising it and finding a buyer who can invest, giving him his turn

Exactly what he did with leicester after administration. Took him four years, with a lot of downs along the way, but he got his turn in the end

I'm serious about the Sheffield question.  No idea who is bigger - would probably go for United if pushed just from my own personal experiences.

I love Gus so much:

"Unfortunately I am getting used to this, we have played three games away from home in a week. The first game was terrible, then we were by far the better team at Bolton and lost 1-0 and today if anyone said Barnsley deserved to win then I should retire.

Sheffield Wednesday are bigger than United.

You can't really compare attendances that much as circumstances have been so different, but when in similar places we comfortable average more than United home and away, whilst having won more & numerous more seasons in the league.

I would probably put us as a similar club to Everton & actually bigger than Man City until the £££ came along.

Absolutely. That worked for a while, Premiership, FA Cup win, Harry wheeling and dealing but at extreme cost as we now know, and its unlikely Portsmouth will ever be seen in their previous pomp again

I think he went to Leicester with the idea to repeat it, but a year or so into that project it was clear Portsmouth was going badly wrong and he downscaled ambitions. Concurrent with the court case which told him he couldn't cut corners again....

Essentially he is a businessman, not a football man. Its all about sweating the asset now, and passing it on

Most predictable post of the day

Can't be bother to argue it, bit like telling Ant Zaha is over-rated :-)

Gus is one of my favourite managers as well.  Seems like a good guy as well as a good coach.
