Promotion/Relegation in Football Leagues Thought.

I was wondering if promoting and relegating 6 teams each year from each tier with a playoff for the 6th promotion slot would be a good idea to the entertainment of the game in general.
It would mean that a safe mid table position would be nearly impossible to maintain, without thinking about promotion or relegation.
Your team is going to have a much more exciting season.
Your team will benefit from promotion and the pay increase that it brings, but adversely suffer the huge fall out by getting relegated, but with maybe a revised parachute payment plan this could be helped.
I just think that there are many teams in a lot of the tiers that just do enough to stay in the league and are content with a lower mid table, safe, position, but if 6 teams went up and 6 down each year the makeup of the game would be completely different. Teams from the league below are often frustratingly better than some teams from the tier above but just can't get into the top 3 slots to get promoted.
Would be a great distribution of wealth of the premierleague to new teams and I think it would make things altogether more interesting.
Thoughts? Expect most of you will think it is a farcical idea, but I just want to stir debate more than anything.

So now Palace have dropped off the pace a bit you wont 6 promoted to get them in the Prem yeah?
It's not a bad idea but the the prem should be hard to get into imo. Its the prem afterall . Don't want any old riff raff like Palace coming up in 6th and replacing a decent team like Westham do we now?

That's a good point and would probably mean teams would tail off and settle for the playoffs, much like they would mid table sometimes. An outright 6 up and 6 down could remedy that, if the playoff idea isn't a go.

lol. That was my first thought. IMO London should only have two clubs like Manchester and Liverpool then the southerners might be able to compete a bit better. Birmingham would have a much better chance too if it was just West Brom and Wolves

the idea of the playoff fish is to maintain interest in championship. Loadsa teams have a legit shot with just a few games remaining. Pehaps have a playoff system for relegation from prem. bottom 2 and 1 more for a remianing four? doesnt seem fair on the team who finishes 15th thou to go down instead of an 18th place side thou. But the playoffs for promo isint exactly fair on the 3rd place team is it

It used to be that the 3rd or 4th (depending on the number of promoted teams) side from the bottom would be in the play offs from the league below.

One idea which I think could work would be to maintain 3 up 3 down, but have the playoffs for the top ten.
Then you'd have a wildcard weekend like in the NFL where the guys coming 7th to 10th have to play for th right to play the teams coming 4th and 5th. And then another round of games to get to play the teams that came 3rd and 4th.
This might make the season too long though.

I like it as it is now TBH.
It still gets ne when the 6th place finisher wins the playoff final, so to increase that to 9th say is just a farce.
2 up + 1 is great and so is the 3 down.
All of this won't matter to Forest this season as we will be nice and safe in 14th!

I see the McLeish effect is in full swing now - 0-3 v managerless Blackburn and then beaten at home to Oldham!

This is how the play-offs first started when they were introduced. One team from the higher division and three from the one below it took part. They abandoned it after a couple of seasons, but I have a vivid memory of Sunderland getting relegated via this format (I remember being in the car while it was on the radio - no idea why it's stuck so much).

Found it. 1986-87.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986%E2%80%9387_Football_League_Third_Division
The reason it was such big news at the time is that it relegated them from Division 2 to 3, not from the top tier.
