Newbury Racecourse's Best Dressed Gent. And What?

   Ed has not posted for four hours which means;
             a) is deeply involved in a splashy cash game where he is winning so much he hasn't time to stack his chips and recount hand histories to both readers of this blog. [  X  ]
              b) has met Dave Nicholson and decided to have a few beers and has now no recollection of why he is in Galway [  ]
              c) has retired to his student gigs with the realisation that he has not taken enough money to survive 5 days in the company of 200,000 Irish blokes in Galway for a weeks racing and 'the craic'. [   ]

Sort of. Not a massive win but a nice start to the trip.

Will get some pics of the venue etc. today but for those interested in a little background (saw Mitch asked in another thread re: the games) I would suggest it's not as busy as they anticipated/hoped. That's not to say there aren't games running, but the place wasn't jumping floor to ceiling.

I think at peak count (was there 7pm-3am) there were probably 15 tables running - around 6 1/2 NLH, a couple of 1/2 PLO then maybe a 2/5 PLO, a 2/5 NLH and a 5/10 NLH pretty much.

In terms of the clients frequenting the establishment....when I arrived I was pretty mortified. I joined a 1/2 table that was infinitely more reminiscent of an online game than a game at the Hippodrome or the Empire. Fold, fold, fold, fold, CO raises to 6, Btn folds, Blinds fold. I mean, really?! It's live poker, where's your hutzpah?!

Last race yesterday was at 815pm so I kept spirits high that at c9pm they'd be arriving by the (proverbial) boatload. Certainly some people arrived post racing but not hundreds. I would say that they probably accounted for 3 people/table at peak. This said, there were also numerous locals there enjoying themselves, the race week and the poker festival so don't think it's 5 wizards and 3 punters (tables play 8-handed Smiley) At times last night my table was pretty bonkers, though as always this ebbed and flowed with the mood/fortunes of its participants.

All in all perhaps a little quieter than I would have hoped, although not entirely more quiet than I was expecting. It takes a lot of heart and commitment to the game to make it from a racecourse to a poker club c4miles away, especially when there are any number of great fun looking watering holes en route. Did get a tip off that the local casino to be at this week is the Eglington, so considering a jaunt there at some point to see what the craic is.

To be fair Ed I think next week is the main Poker week and this week is mainly about
the horse racing. Don't be to surprised that not everyone who has had a long day at the Races
hasn't rushed over to the Full Tilt Tented Village to spew cash to you !  Equally next week the venue will
full of Poker players. Seems the recreational fish/ whales are increasingly hard to find these days !
See you tomorrow subject to safe extraction from morning meetings in London. Will pinstripe be acceptable attire ?
Also is it not time you won a side event or something ?

Toying with the idea of participating in one of the daily tournaments just for a shot at an Irish flag....

That is one of THE best adverts ever. I have been eulogising about it for ages.

I can just imagine Mitch in his speedo's doing it.

Jeez , I need help.....

A less successful day yesterday, dusting off the majority of the day 1 profits. Part cold decks, part forcing the action too much for a late afternoon/early evening game. On the plus side, I got to see lilDave playing a spot of HU Vs Gus and met and had a good chat with Claypole. Played the 150Eur comp in a quest for a flag, also think when cash is going poorly its important to have the discipline to take a step away. Played pretty well I think, maintained a stack reasonably well throughout in spite of losing, with one exception, every time I had a player all in with me generally in the ascendancy. Still, no grumbles - life is too short and if one plays well that's all you can do.

Father Gascoigne arrives a little later on, seriously hoping he brings a change of weather in his suitcase as it is currently hacking it down.

Chap fishing just off 'Salmon Weir' (think it's called). Pretty cool, don't see too much of this in London city centre.

Currently sat in Pret at human zoo called Terminal One.
I wonder if they call them Termimals because that is how they make you feel. I am sure a lot of the people are nice and have a story to tell but the British are heading towards a serious obesity epidemic within 15 years. I feel most sorry for the children. We live in a toxic food environment and I am sure it will be the big issue for the country very soon. Forget smoking and cancer, this will be massive.
On a more cheery note very much looking forward to the break. Objectives are pretty well defined.
      a) run deep in a couple of comps whilst having fun.
      b) play some cash games, win or break even and have some fun.
      c) visit some of the beaches on the West Coast and have fun.
       d) have a few pints of the black stuff.
       e) get to grips with the photo uploading via photo bucket. Very hit and miss at the moment.

If I achieve these simple goals I will be a happy old fart. Most amusing part of the day was the 'Superman' change in the toilets here. Couldn't arrive in Shannon in a suit could I. Next challenge is the flight and the hire car. Never mind the map reading etc. it's amazing how emasculated you can become at work.

A little early to say. There are some strong teams in the league and I am not convinced we have the strength in depth to mount a serious challenge. I always start every season with immense optimism which has usually plummeted by about 3.17pm. Never forget going to Ipswich away one sunny day and we were 3 down within 20 minutes or so.
Cannot see Leicester or Forest or Leeds doing much though   stirthepot stirthepot
