it's nice to only ever play monsters in tournaments, but u still need to accumulate chips with your strong hands. AK is a strong hand, you're only in bad shape versus KK or AA. Other players often have much looser starting hand requirements than you and you should charge these inferior hands to play. Given the right flop, you can stack people with AK.
I agree it's a good idea to mix it up and i will sometimes limp AK IN EP for deception. but if the blinds add enough to my stack to be of significance, ill be making a play for them with a raise. The good thing about AK is it is strong against a wide range of hands, but its weakness for me is that it is only a big favourite over other aces or kings. For this reason i think it's a good idea to generate some fodling equity preflop and push out hands that can outflop you easily but won't call a raise.
As for playing the flop when you miss, this is always tricky, but its a combination of the type of hands u feel the caller will call you with, the texture of the flop, how strong your opponent is etc.
